That's how much I like this children's Bible. The only quibble I have is the cover: why do they pick a kangaroo character instead of an animal that we actually see in the Bible?
danniAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good choice for preschoolersOctober 6, 2015danniAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4In my quest to find a bible that is effective and appropriate for a preschooler, I came across this one and decided to request both the blue and the pink (for future baby girl).
Right away, my son was excited to flip through it and read all his favorite stories. We immediately turned to Noahs Ark as a test run to see if we liked the format of the bible.
This particular bible uses an abridged version of the New Living Translation. I understand that the NLT is easier to understand, particularly for young readers, but in general I am not a fan of the NLT. I lean towards ESV or Hollman as they are most accurate to the true interpretation or the original language. Nonetheless, my son seemed to have no issues with understanding the corresponding scripture for each story. In fact, he was able to repeat some of the simpler verses on his own.
I also found that due to the shortened nature of each story, often there were several missing details. Of course we cannot expect stories to be full length when reading to a preschooler, but each biblical account has its core details that are vital to the overall teaching. This is where the parent will have to be intuitive enough to bring those details into the story on their own.
There are 85 (39 Old Testament 46 New Testament) stories included. Additionally, there are several extras that engage the preschooler even further:
- Hands-On Activities: these are indicated by colored hand prints throughout each story and provide suggestions on applicable hands-on activities to complete that relate back to the story.
- Time To Pray: this section is self-explanatory but includes very simple, easy prayers for the child.
- Lets Talk: this section discusses the underlying lesson from each story and provides real life application.
- Jesus Connection: this section very clearly displays a connection to Jesus, whether He is in the story or not.
- Pocket & Cuddles: these are animal characters portrayed in each story to assist in activities and discussion.
So, despite the few dislikes I have, my son seems to thoroughly enjoy it and has continued to ask to read it.
