This is the second book I have read by Karen. I loved Stealing the Preacher so I was anxious to read her newest release.

Well, Full Steam Ahead did not disappoint.

She has crafted another well written book with characters that are quirky, spunky and charming.

And as the title says, once you pick up this book it is full team ahead with the story. Chapter after chapter adds a new layer or twist to the plot.

Nicole is on a mission to find a husband so she can save her father's business but there's danger after her so she takes a little detour. But I think it's more of a Genesis 5020, if you ask me. This detour leads her to Darius.

At first I wasn't so sure about him. He seemed a bit too strange, but really he is on a mission of his own. He wants to save peoples lives due to what happens in the prologue of the book. As he gets to know Nicole he becomes more demensional, there's a softer side to this guy and not only does he find himself wanting to save other people, he also wants to protect Nicole.

Karen is an excellent writer and if you like historical romance this is one you will enjoy.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Weaving the historically accurate dangers of steamboats with a story of a pirate's legacy, Karen Witemeyer keeps her readers enthralled and educated. Her main characters are flawed and deeply attractive to readers, and to each other! Darius is an obsessed and reclusive scientific-type who has never been one for social graces, but turns out to be the perfect match for the feisty guardian of a special dagger, who is searching for a husband and running from danger. As time runs out they must learn to rely on one another and on God to save them from the dangers without and the pain within.

I really loved the development of the romance in this story. Great dialogue, mixed with great character idiosyncrasies made for funny but poignant interactions. The heroine is definitely too hard-headed for her own good, but I suppose the story would not be as exciting without it. I did find the villians very villainous, without much back story explaining how they got to such a point in their lives. They had no redeeming qualities except stupidity; which is sad, because in God's eyes we are all redeemable. It would have made the intense scenes a little more bearable if they had been softened with this truth at least at the end.

Hope you'll enjoy the book as much as I did. I'm pretty sure I read it through in one sitting even though it's a full length novel. It was just that good (and gripping).

Thanks to Net Galley (https://www.netgalley.com/) and Bethany House for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. And thanks to Karen Witemeyer for writing another great novel.

Full Steam Ahead is a humorous, fun filled lark of a story that takes place during the heyday of steam propelled riverboats in the South. It brings to light a terrible problem with those early steamboats that killed and injured thousands. The boilers were prone to blowing up and the cause was not known. After one such tragedy hits home personally, Darius Thornton devotes his life to discovering why this is happening and how to fix it. The antics of the spunky Nicole and mad scientist Darius liven the book up and keep it from feeling dark and serious.

I've enjoyed every book I've read by Karen Witemeyer. I enjoy her unique blend of history and humour and this was no exception, however I did find the romance aspect of the story took over too much by last third of the book. It would have been nice to have a less hurried wrap up of the important scientific work Darius was involved in. All in all though, it's a great read that should not be missed by fans of Ms. Witemeyer.

Nicole Renard has known for years that her father was disappointed he never had a male heir. She has tried for years to make up for being a girl. When her family is threatened by a feud that has been going on for years Nicole agrees to find an heir for her father from among his shipping acquaintances. When her destination is suddenly changed Nicole improvises a plan that sends her to the doorstep of Darius Thornton.

Darius is being chased by demons of his own. He knows first-hand what happens when a boiler explodes on a steam ship. Obsessed with finding a way to prevent such explosions in the future he works night and day experimenting with dangerous explosions. Needing a secretary to keep his notes readable and legible he has advertised for a male secretary. Nicole is not what he has expected at all.

I enjoyed FULL STEAM AHEAD. As always with one of Karen Witemeyer's books there is a strong-quick-witted female character that makes me laugh. There is also always the element of danger and suspense. Two evil villains are after Nicole and they will stop at nothing to get what they want from her. Darius makes a great damsel in distress rescuer as well as the absent-minded professor that wakes up to the beauty right beside him. I always appreciate the faith aspect of Karen Witemeyer's books as well. If you are a fan of Karen Witemeyer's writing then I think this is a great addition to the collection.

With non-stop drama, captivating characters, and romance galore, "Full Steam Ahead" is sure to please long-time fans of Karen Witemeyer while garnering her a host of new followers as well. The plot is a rather intriguing one, from the obsessed Darius seeking to stop any more deaths due to exploding boilers on steamships, to Nicole seeking to please her father by finding a suitable husband while protecting the family treasure. Nicole is unlike any heroine you have met before, and there were many moments that had me smiling (especially the scene with the snake!). Just when you think you have her figured out, she reveals another side to herself, and I especially enjoyed the scene between Nicole and Darius where she encourages him to forgive himself and allow God back into his life. Witemeyer handles the issue of faith very well, not coming across as pushy and yet making it a vital part of her character's lives. Readers will be encouraged to consider how they handle tragedies in their own lives, all while being entertained by Nicole and Darius antics. Those readers who love a good historical setting will appreciate the focus on steamships and boiler safety in the 1800's, and I love that Nicole is clearly a clever lass who can hold her own in the area of math and science. Now, are there some sections of the book where you will find it necessary to suspend your belief about the reality of such a scene occurring? Yes, perhaps, but you will do so gladly, happy to escape reality in order to spend some time with Darius and Nicole. And my wife assures me that the romance in "Full Steam Ahead" will leave the ladies smiling, so I encourage you to pick up a copy for yourselves!

Witemeyer has produced another winner with her latest read, and I award it a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
