I've come to expect great things from Regina Jennings and couldn't wait to get my hands on her latest novel, Caught in the Middle, the story of Anne Tillterton and Nick Lovelace, whom we met briefly in her previous two books. I found even more than I expected.

You won't find a more unlikely couple than Anne and Nick. Anne is a rough-riding buffalo hunter (yes, you read that right) with a painful past and Nick is a debonair sweet-talker with a bright future. Regina's trademark humor and eye for historical detail are right on target. The romance between these disparate characters is filled with misunderstandings, witty banter, and plenty of chemistry (plus a surprise on page 267 that I never saw coming!) Add to that a heart-breaking moment that had me blinking back tears, and Caught in the Middle fulfilled all my expectations.

But there is much more to Caught in the Middle. Where the story of Ann and Nick really shines is in Regina's ability to dig deep into her characters souls. Within her gifted storytelling, she brings to light the hurts and misconceptions that not only keep Anne and Nick from each other, but keep them from a fuller understanding of their faith in God and what it really means to trust in him.

Regina's books never fail to be both satisfying and leave me asking challenging questions about my own faith. I highly recommend Caught in the Middle and hope to see many more stories from this talented author.

Absolutely fantastic story! It was so engrossing that I couldn't put it down! I read the whole novel in one sitting in under four hours! I had personally never read any of Regina Jennings work before, and let me say this- she has gained a new fan! The plot and story line were flawless! I loved the concept, and personally, with all the books I've read, I have never read anything along those lines before. That is very hard to do, and she did it extremely well! Anne as a character is fabulous! I loved her spunk and bravery. She is a very strong person, and watching her journey with Nick was intriguing and fascinating. An unlikely alliance to be sure, but a great one. This novel had just the right mixture of mystery, romance, and familial love. Overall, I will definitely be rereading this one and recommending it to anyone desperate for a little happiness. Because one thing is for sure- it has definitely brought me that. I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.

I loved learning more about Anne. I was so drawn to her in the previous books and was thrilled to finally know her story. I couldn't stop reading - I just had to know what this extraordinary woman planned to do next! I loved her determination and how she grew to be more dependent on people in general. This is just a wonderful story of love and I loved how Nick's humorous outlook slowly drew Anne to trust him. Great book..definitely a favorite!

In the third novel of her Ladies of Caldwell County, Regina Jennings follows what happens to Anne Tillerton - a woman who killed her husband. After growing up in a house of neglect, Anne married into a home of abuse. Now a widow, Anne has shunned society to be a buffalo hunter; only the need to track down a cook sends her into town, where she encounters the brother of the closest woman she could call a friend. When the cook disappears again, this time leaving Anne stuck with her squalling baby, Anne has to depend on Nick to help with the infant and track down the babe's irresponsible father. In the meantime, Nick is juggling a booming business, filling in as a county commissioner, and just possibly running for election in a few weeks - not exactly a time he would pick to aid a disreputable woman who dresses like a man.

Jennings does a great job with character development. While both of the main characters had been introduced in the previous two books, she really digs into their personalities, histories, and motivations. My favorite character ended up being Nick. Based on the previous books, it is clear Nick is a nice guy, and the beginning of this book reiterates too. A bit of a gambler at heart, he has business savvy and is good with people. But when Nick is forced to make serious decisions that are not just straight business, he becomes a man worthy of great respect. I was impressed by his choices even when they could affect his health, wealth, and happiness. He is an appealing hero.

As Nick discovers, it is easy to follow God when the going is easy. It's easy to trust when content. But God wants us to trust all the time, to depend on Him regardless of the circumstances. And sometimes, doing the right thing has major consequences; being a christian does not make one exempt from the actions of others in this corrupt world. As Jennings points out, God is to be loved apart from His gifts, to be obeyed regardless of the consequences. Through her story, she turns that into a powerful message.

There were definitely several moments of humor in there - Anne's wild ways translate into some pretty funny social situations with a stuck-up society matron. The journey of love that Anne travels with baby Sammy and Nick is a tender tale, and my eyes did not always remain precisely dry while reading it. A strong, tender, God-honoring story - 5 out of 5 stars!

Thank you Bethany House and NetGalley for a free e-copy for the purpose of review; I was not required to make it positive, and all opinions are my own.

"Is God to be loved apart from His gifts?" "Is He to be obeyed despite the consequences?" Anne Tillerton and Nicholas Lovelace are about to find out.

First impressions are important; and first chapters can drive readers to distraction or immerse them into a story line with amazing results. "Caught in the Middle" has a great first chapter. Anne Tillerton, disguised as a man, happens on the same train as Nicholas Lovelace, obviously a man; when they suddenly discover that they have been acquainted in the past. Before they can fully decide what to do with that revelation, their train is overtaken with bandits; and Anne saves Nick's life with her quick thinking and even quicker draw of her gun.

Both head to Garber, Texas; Nick to resume his business as a railroad transportation specialist, providing valuable lumber for a large railroad company and Anne to hunt down a runaway cook from the Pushmataha, Indian Territory depot. Both become "derailed" when their paths cross again; Anne is homeless and guardian of the runaway cook's young son and Nicholas discovers that his recent appointment to the county commission is a ruse to ensure that he votes against a proposed bridge project.

There were so many things that I loved about this book; great characters, an interesting story line and deep, personal struggles that took courage to resolve. Annie is an amazing young woman; she has survived a difficult childhood and a murderous, abusive husband. Although smart and witty, her broken heart is terrified of love. Nicholas learns, mostly the hard way, that there are more important things in life than money and fame. People whom he thought were honorable friends become ruthless enemies when threatened with exposure. When Annie takes off with Sammy, to avoid relinquishing custody of a child she has grown to love, Nick follows her. Both must overcome their fears of total commitment; to their God and to each other, if a deep attraction is ever going to grow into an enduring love.

"Caught in the Middle" is an amazing book that I was privileged to receive from the author as an advance reader. Regina Jennings has now written three great stories; and I am thrilled to know that there is a fourth one on the horizon.
