The movie is advertised by saying it brings a youth group together. However, this movie is a lot deeper than just a weekend trip.
The movie is split into two parts: a modern-day small youth group going on a camping trip and the times of Hosea.
I purchased the book, because I am studying Hosea personally. I wanted to get a visual of the book. This movie did an excellent job of portraying Hosea's love for his wife, how it must have felt to have people knowing your wife is cheating on you, and how heartbroken he was. The acting was excellent.
The portion about Hosea helps you see how the people of Hosea's day did not believe anything bad was going to happen, because they were prosperous and things were going well. It had a lot of parallels to trying to reach people for Jesus.
The portion of the movie that was about the youth group was realistic in how there was teasing, and misunderstandings. The girl in the movie who was the outsider was portrayed well with someone who may not "get" religious people. The movie had the characters probably resolving their issues in a short period of time that went beyond reality, but it is a movie. And movies take things beyond life at times to teach a lesson.
I felt the movie was excellent and would be good for teaching about reaching out to people, for helping you to see just how much God loves you no matter what, and a glimpse into the lives of prophets and how it was difficult to do the things God wanted them to do, but they were faithful even when culture laughed at them, threatened them, and they had to go through heartbreaking things.
I've seen the movie twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. I invited several friends to view it and they also were blessed in how it was presented. They love the story of Hosea. I want to share this movie with my youth group. It shows God's love and faithfulness.
This was an excellent film, and not only did the teens enjoy watching it, it motivated and generated an interest in reading the book of Hosea for themselves and other Old Testament books in the bible, and a great deal of discussion concerning redemption and love. Rich Christiano, you did it again, thank you continuing in Christ making movies of conviction, purity, and always Christ honoring, it's rare.
