Allison was sure she had heard from God. He had promised He would save their marriage. Yet here she was, alone in the Idaho mountains in the cabin she had inherited from her great aunt Emma. Her alcoholic husband gone after she had given him the ultimatum. She had been so sure and now it seemed God had not kept His promise.

This is a great novel, a combination of a contemporary story with a historical one. After Allison gets settles in the cabin, she begins to explore the attic. She finds journals her great aunt had kept. As Allison's story develops, we periodically read from Emma's journals. This technique of reading about Allison's life and Emma's life is perfectly done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is so well written. I felt like I really knew Allison as she struggled with her faith in God's promises. While she never looses her strong faith, she certainly questions how she hears from God. Her experience is so familiar. And I really enjoyed Emma's story. It was very interesting to see how a troubled marriage was dealt with in the 1920s and 30s.

Well written, a great story, well presented characters, all revolving around a committed Christian faith, this is a superb novel. I highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through the Litfuse Publicity Group for the purpose of this review.

This isn't the life Allison had planned but things don't always turn out as you plan. Her daughter is a grown woman and lives far away and her alcoholic husband left her even though she was certain God would heal their marriage, so Allison moves into the old log cabin home in the mountains of Idaho left to her by her Great Aunt Emma several years back. Allison has never been much of a collector nor has she kept memorabilia from her life. Emma left Allison box after box of items in the attic that reveal Emma had much more in common with Allison than she ever realized. Can Allison still be comforted and learn from the content of those boxes and the heartache her aunt had experienced? Healing comes from a number of unexpected places.

In some ways, there are two stories going on at the same time. Emma's story, which primarily takes place in the 1920s and 30s, and Allison's current day journey of healing, from her pain and disappointment, and her return to trusting God. The transitions between the time periods and the connection between the two are expertly done and easy to follow.

I have always enjoyed reading Robin Lee Hatcher's writings but she has addressed something in this novel that I don't know has been hit head on so well before. Allison felt certain God had promised to heal her marriage and then she felt God telling her to let go of her marriage. Why had God not kept his promise? Had she misunderstood either his promise or his direction? Everyone has certainly felt that way at one time or another and the author does an excellent addressing that question. Knowing that Ms. Hatcher used experiences from her own life in this novel , walking a path similar to Allison's, makes it even a more compelling story.

One of her best yet, A Promise Kept addresses alcoholism, divorce, and searching for God through a beautiful story. I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and was in no way obligated to write a positive review.

Set in two different time frames, but with the common bridge of doubt, pain, finding strength and rediscovering God, "A Promise Kept" by Robin Lee Hatcher was an eloquently written story about two different women in different times, yet facing similar issues of rediscovering the person that God had made them to be while struggling with painful relationships that seem to have no hope.

The book captured the pain that not only ending relationships can carry with it and the questions that later arises, but also the importance of not losing who you are, no matter where in life one is, and touches on the power of healing, rediscovery and family.

With two main characters in different time periods, Robin Lee Hatcher, did a wonderful job at delicately carrying both stories without one losing too much with the other, all the while blending the power message of redemption that is carried throughout the book and how there is hope in all circumstances.

The characters, Allison and her great-aunt, Emma, are strong, well rounded characters who go through a journey of finding their voice and heart again while facing uncertainty due to their circumstances. Fully fleshed out with a strong background, Robin creates characters that are engaging and sympathetic and all the while drawing the reader to the common background of a rustic cabin, set back in the mountainous woods, that hosts both Allison and her great-aunt, although at different times, but for the same reasons of a broken heart.

It is almost like the place was created specifically, set back in the woods of the mountain, for a place of healing and retreat, as both women, in their own ways, find their way not just back to God and His redemption but healing in relationships and in the lives of the people that they meet.

The book was a wonderful read and it really touched on the journey it takes with accepting God's word, but not seeing it manifest as one may sometimes expect it to, as both Allison and Emma, share in both journal and journey, their attempts to not only make sense of the circumstances that suddenly surround them but a deeper understanding of what is it that God's plan for them was since what they thought, didn't manifest as they had prayed.

"A Promise Kept" shows that God's manifestation of His promises isn't always what we may imagine it to be, but sometimes in different ways that are much grander than we can expect. The story is honest and emotional wrenching at times while others, I found myself feeling like I was there with the characters and experiencing their life as they were experiencing life.

The people are real and tugged at the heart as a good book should, when it draws a reader in and "A Promise Kept", balanced between a powerful message and reminder and a enthralling story that keeps the reader turning the pages.

I really enjoyed reading, "A Promise Kept" and felt like it was a book to be share with someone as a reminder that though the characters weren't real, it was so easy to identify with them, in their doubt, their discovery and the power of grace and redemption that rings throughout this book.

God keeps His promises, maybe not in the way and time we want and expected. In A PROMISE KEPT by Robin Lee Hatcher we are shown again that God is a God of His word.

Allison Kavanaugh moves to the mountains of Idaho to start over after her marriage ends. Believing she had heard from God she had used "tough love" with her husband Tony, an alcholic. But he had walked out instead of the outcome she had envisioned.

Moving into the cabin her Great Aunt Emma had left her north of Boise she begins to work through her disappointment and reaches out and learns to talk to God again. Doubting her ability to hear from God, she had drifted and stopped talking to Him. In the attic she finds several journals of her aunts where she discovers an aunt she didn't know as well as she thought.

The book is a telling of two stories and through them both we see God's redemptive grace and restoration. I loved reading this narrative and give it a big thumbs up!

I received this book free from Thomas Nelson for an honest review.

Reviewing A PROMISE KEPT by Robin Lee Hatcher

The writing style of the book is without chapters, but in keeping with the story, more like a diary of two lives; subjects covered include alcoholism, divorce, abuse, tough love, infidelity, with a cover that is right on target with the story. Beautiful.

I would recommend this book to people whose marriages are experiencing any of the above because of the issues dealt with.

Some of the good statements contained in the book include "A faith that can't be tested can't be trusted:" Times change but 'people' don't; God hates divorce. He doesn't hate the divorced; Easier is not necessarily better; Why does time fly by when you are happy and creep along when in sorrow? How can I pray 'thy will be done' if I know it includes going through the fire and I don't want to? If you stop moving forward, you move backward...like facing the wrong way on a conveyor belt. The television tells us we are worthy of whatever will make us beautiful or rich, smart, happy, and we want it, but..." Freedom in Christ is the only kind worth anything.

The author covers these difficult subjects scripturally and interestingly. She brings up situations that make you think, what would you do, or how would you react, ie, if your younger sister were the 'beautiful and popular' one and people flocked to her or used you to get to her; the question is asked, Can you be a Christian and a drunk at the same time; should you force the issue and find out if there is infidelity; we are who we are because of and in spite of...

The author weaves appropriate scriptures throughout the story to support or define things that are happening. In many instances she compares teachings many grew up with that often are no longer taught, ie, courtesy, respect, dress, homemaking vs career. She tells us that Jesus invites us to be yoked with Him as we walk through the fire of life together.

The book has a Reading Group Guide in the back so it can be used for discussion in group settings. I would recommend this book.

I received this book free from HarperCollins Christian Publishing CTB Thomas Nelson for review without any restrictions as to my comments.
