Lieutenant Mellie Blake happily serves her country, now deeply involved in World War 2. She didn't have friends as a child, having lived overseas part time due to her father's job. As an adult, she's had difficulty making friends, so she keeps a professional distance from the other Army nurses. This plan works just fine, until her supervisors order her to make friends and fit in or else.

Tom MacGilliver, also a Lieutenant in the United States Army, keeps a low profile for other reasons. His father's shady past has made their last name a household word, and Tom hasn't been able to shake the stigma. To make matters worse, he's unable to gain true respect from the men in his company.

Mellie reluctantly participates in a morale-building program where nurses correspond anonymously with soldiers. She agrees to write one letter. Turns out, the letter goes to Tom. And he writes back. These two lonely souls settle into a routine of correspondence, feeling secure with their agreement of anonymity.

Mellie's duties as a flight nurse take her overseas, close to Tom's unit. As the war intensifies, their affection for each other grows and both entertain notions of revealing their identities. Will fear and circumstances prevent a meeting?

Sarah Sundin's attention to historical detail is outstanding. It lends authenticity and character to her stories. Not only does she entertain readers, she challenges them through her characters' flaws and growth. I enjoyed getting to know Mellie and Tom, and watching them stretch out of their comfort zone as they got acquainted and navigated their way through perilous times. I enjoyed With Every Letter thoroughly, and am looking forward to the next books in the series.

I, too, was honored to receive an advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion. I was familiar with Sarah Sundin's name, but hadn't yet had a chance to read any of her books yet.

After reading With Every Letter, all I can say is WOW! I promptly purchased all three of her earlier novels. And I'm now convinced I would get more sleep (and more accomplished in home and work life) if Sarah just stopped writing. I feel like I'm back in my younger years again, when I would sneak more reading time under the covers with a flashlight. Husband would likely notice that now, unfortunately.

I was hooked on With Every Letter from the very first page onward. I finished the book on a 251-mile drive home last weekend (yes, ignoring my husband the entire way), and still the story of Tom & Mellie stays with me. It's a beautiful tale of overcoming one's upbringing and learning to forgive the toxic people in our lives, woven seamlessly into the historical accounts of World War II flight evacuation nurses and engineers in the North African theater. As a "research geek," I also loved Sarah's attention to details and the thoroughness of her background research. The book put me there, powerfully and completely.

In short, I learned a lot about this part of the war (yes, soldiers did wear shoes, and not boots, in the war's earlier years). But more importantly, this book spoke deeply into my soul, coming into my life at just the right time. God always knows, doesn't He? :>)

So, Note to Sarah: Write faster and write more. Note to Revell: Is it really necessary to wait another year to publish the next book in the Nightingale series?!? I can't wait!!

I can always count on a Sarah Sundin novel to truly take me away into another time and place. I worried when the book arrived (full disclosure — I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion...) I was worried I wouldn't have a moment to even dive into it. I haven't been able to finish a stack of books I need to review.

But I opened the book and read the first chapter. Then another. And another.

In classic Sundin fashion, this story sucks you in from the beginning with in-depth research, unique characters and aspects of World War II you don't see in every other tired historical fiction. You'll walk away from this book a bit smarter, I guarantee.

At least, you'll know what bark is used as a substitute for aspirin.

Beyond the historically-accurate details and catchy dialogue, this story addresses serious issues of family legacies that can trap us and prejudices that can destroy us. There are so many times I related to the main character and rooted for her. There were a few times I wished Sundin could have dug a little deeper and shared more of the story (i.e. the main character and her father) but I say that knowing I would have been just as engaged if the book were 120,000 words or more. (Nudge, nudge, Sarah. Maybe create a companion e-novella?)

I look forward to more in the Wings of the Nightingale series and highly recommend this book to history lovers and literary lovers alike.

Goodness, I think it's the first time this happens to me. JUST finished With Every Letter and boy a few days ago, I didn't believe that I would even be writing a positive review about it. I didn't believe that I would finish it.

Let me give you not the not so good part, then we'll get to the good one.

I really did not like the book at first sight. In fact I remember being on p. 120 and deciding to just forget about it all.

    1) Things were moving at a REALLY slow pace. Too slow, in my opinion.

    2) It's been a while since I studied WW2 so I was a bit confused about a lot of the historical facts. I have a general knowledge of the War, but I believe that for this book a more in-depth knowledge is required. Not to mention that the unfamiliar military language and context added to my confusion. (The author did her research well though!)

    3) The characters frustrated me! Too self-conscious with VERY low self-esteem. They were the kind that you'd want to shake and say 'Come on! Don't think of yourself that way, you're worth more! Mellie was too shy to the point that I found her to be a bit childish at some points and Tom just would not take matters into his hands as the leader of his platoon and would just keep smiling, when clearly, his men were lazy and people were telling him that things were just not right. I understood their reasons for acting the way they were but I was still frustrated.

HOWEVER. I started to flip through the pages and I realized that there were some surprising twists coming up. So I skimmed and skipped some parts, read the ones the ones that I found interesting- and they were many from that point on.. I was glued in! There was drama, humour, and the characters started to come alive and I found myself so eager to know how the story ended.

It was good! It was really good.

The characters matured and evolved and things started to change. Mellie almost left me with the impression that she was a bit selfish... right until she changed her mind before, ahem, the meeting. ( Don't want to giveaway anything.) Faith flowed easily and beautifully in the story and be still my heart the romance was SO lovely!!

    *Sigh*

I'm so glad to be giving this four stars. My first read from Sarah Sundin and I'm curious about the next one in this series.

    Well done!

I really love Sundin's books. They're all set during World War II and the best description I can come up with to describe them is "the greatest generation." They're great stories, but it also feels like I'm reading a tribute to the amazing men and women and the brave sacrifices they made to give us the gift of freedom that we enjoy today.
