The Thoene's have delivered yet another master piece with their latest title When Jesus Wept. Set in the time when Jesus walked the earth, we witness a tale of political and religious turmoil, in Lazarus' point of view.

I loved the fact that the main events in Jesus ministry are surrounded by Lazarus life, from the wedding in Cana, feeding of the multitudes, and the triumphal entry. The amount of historical accuracy and rich Biblical detail in this account was amazing. The many historical facts were not boring but enriching. The authors stayed very Biblically accurate and as many as complete paragraphs were taken straight from the Bible.

The many secondary characters were an added richness to the tale. Each of their lives were some how intertwined with Lazarus and Jesus' ministry. The depiction of Jesus' Jewishness was a refreshing aspect. He was shown as a normal Jewish man (partaking in their many customs) and like the wonderful King of the universe at the same time. The authors also included some very profound revelations to the Jewish culture that allowed the reader to connect further

    with the bible.

As a history lover my obvious favorite thing was the rich historical aspects to this story. If you do not appreciate history as much this may not be the book for you. I on the other hand very much enjoyed it and would give it a 5 out of 5.

I received this free copy from Litfuse, in exchange for this independent and unbiased review.

You may have read a retelling of the story of Lazarus before...but I guarantee that it didn't hold a candle to this particular version. Because this one? Is from Lazarus's point of view. Before I give a few more details about that, let me mention that the amount of historical detail and accuracy in general relation to the time period in this book is simply stunning. I have been very impressed with all the research that the Thoenes have poured into all their books, including the A. D. Chronicles and the Zion Chronicles (two of my favorite series by them, especially the latter). But the detail isn't boring at all — it's just there, making the story realistic and enjoyable.

Now, on to the other things I noticed. I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the beginning, I picked up some of the story of Ben-Hur! If you aren't very familiar with the book/movie, you probably won't notice — but I've read and watched it enough that I caught it. And it totally made me happy because it was worked in so well! Another thing that was described in fascinating detail and with great (though reasonable) imagination included the Cana wedding, where Jesus performed his first recorded miracle. I was delighted to again meet Peniel, who we originally came across in the A. D. Chronicles (I think...but it's been a while since I read them). One interesting writer's liberty that the authors took was making Lazarus's sister, Mary (the woman we remember as being sweet and worshipping Jesus and washing His feet with her hair) into the same woman as Mary Magdalene (who came to Jesus' grave later on) and also making her be the woman who was caught in adultery. Remember her? The one where the leaders accused her, and demanded that she be stoned — Jesus said that the one among them who was without sin should cast the first stone. I rather doubt that Lazarus's sister was ALL of these women, but it certainly made for an interesting concept. One other liberty that the authors took was to make Lazarus into one of the disciples who was sent to fetch a donkey colt for Jesus to ride in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. I can't recall if the disciples who are sent are specifically named or not, but I'm not sure if this is accurate.

Other than that last thing mentioned, the entire book is amazingly accurate to the Bible and very believable. Much of the dialogue with Jesus is taken straight from the Bible (perhaps with slight editing to make it read more smoothly). The Thoenes are still writing strong, and I look forward to more books in this series!

I fell in love with WWII novels while reading Bodie Thoene's Zion Chronicle and Zion Covenant series. She has an absolute knack for making the history come alive in the context of story and characters that are so real. I've read several of her A.D. Chronicles (co-written with husband Brock), but when I saw this cover and this title, I knew I had to be part of this tour.

When Jesus Wept transports readers to Biblical times. Lazurus is imagined as a recent widower who is trying to put the pieces of his life back together after his tragedy. In classic Thoene way, this book from the first page deposited me in a different time period and place and had me firmly believing I'd arrived. Rich historical and political details are woven into the backdrop in a way that adds authenticity without slowing down the story. I'm usually skeptical of Biblical fiction because I don't want the truth of the Bible muddied in my mind with an author's ideas. I've found in the Thoenes Biblical fiction a tone that adds richness to what the Bible describes.

If you love historical fiction or are looking for a fresh take on a well known friendship, give this book a try! I think you'll like it.

Okay, this novel made me cry a few times, especially toward the end. That gets big points from me, because this story made me ponder my life and the things that I believe. I found the way the story was put together very emotionally gripping. The way the various scriptures and prophecies were woven into the story made the truth of the Bible even more clear. I loved how the authors gave the story context.

One thing I never thought about before was this... how did Lazarus feel about being brought back from the dead? He was in a perfect, timeless place where there was no pain, sickness, or injustice. Maybe Jesus wept in part because He knew what he was ripping Lazarus away from when He called him out of the tomb, but it had to be done since it was part of God's plan.

The scriptures also talk about how the priests and Pharisees not only wanted to kill Jesus, but Lazarus as well. Of course, after living in paradise, how could one who tasted eternity in all of it's beauty now fear death? Simply put, he didn't. What struck me about this truth was this... if that's what we have to look forward too, then we need to have no fear of death. As Jesus said, "Do not fear those who can kill the body, but those who destroy the soul." I'm paraphrasing it, but you know what I mean. Excellent read!

I was a little skeptical going into this book. I know the Thoenes have written several books, but have never read any of them. I figured they wrote historical romance novels. I don't actually know what their other books are about, but I really liked this book. I've read several Biblical fiction books recently and this one didn't disappoint. One must realize that this is fiction, so liberties are taken, but that's on circumstances we aren't told about in the Bible.

"Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus.

When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by bestselling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament.

Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have born some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more."

I loved how the Thoenes brought to life the life of Jesus as the master Vine dresser. I appreciated a fresh look at how Christ works in our lives to bring us closer to Him and make us more like Him. I look forward to reading the next book in the Jerusalem Chronicles.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for review.
