In this book Mark explores the story of the Samaritan woman at the well found in John 4. Using the story of the woman at the well; Mark explores how pursuing approval, control, religion, talent, and entitlement leave people empty and longing for more that only Jesus Christ can provide. Throughout the book, Mark rightly points the reader to Christ who alone can satisfy the longings of the human heart.
This is a well-written book on a topic that needs to be taught on more. Often times, Christians treat Christianity like another thing they "get to do" rather than a daily drinking from the living water from the Well of God's love. By this I mean; often times believers walk through the motions, and never experience God out of the abundance of their knowing Him. As the story of the woman at the well demonstrates God meets us where we are at in order to transforms our entire lives by setting us on the paths of righteous living for Him.
Through the use of personal stories from his own life, practical suggestions and exploration of Jesus encounter with the woman at the well; Mark helps his readers diagnose the idols of their hearts and points them to Jesus Christ. I recommend you pick up The Well by Mark Hall to learn from a man who has drunk deeply the fount of the Well of Life in Jesus Christ. Reading this book in my opinion will help you to diagnose the various ways in which you have found satisfaction outside of Jesus Christ, and stir your affections afresh to be satisfied in and by Him alone.

Paul ThinkingOutLoudOntario, CanadaAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5The Well turns John Chapter Four on its head.August 15, 2011Paul ThinkingOutLoudOntario, CanadaAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Jesus. A Samaritan woman. A conversation of at high noon. We call the story, "The Woman at the Well." But Jesus promises her living water. He tells her that He is that living water. The structure they are standing beside is just a hole in the ground. We should call it "The Woman Who Spoke to a Well." Because she was talking to The One who is The Well.
That's my paraphrase of what I took away from just the first chapter of this excellent book. Subsequent chapters deal with several different "wells" we allow to be substitutes for the living water only Jesus can offer.
I know Casting Crowns fan will enjoy this book by the band's lead singer and road pastor, but I believe there is something for everyone here, and with this book Mark Hall emerges as an author to watch. This is a great resource for personal reading or for a ten-week small group study.
