Product Description

All towns have secrets. Some have demons. Welcome to East Salem, a sleepy town with a history older than America where things are just a bit off; where the supernatural bleeds into the everyday. And where a tragic murder mystery is underway. A high school girl is found dead in the town park; and where forensic psychiatrist Dani Harris wants answers. All the suspects were teenagers who were at the party with her the night before--who he last spoke with on their last high school date forever ago. Yet his celebrity status opens doors barred to Dani--so they form an awkward alliance. They soon realize that there's more to the mystery than murder. And more to the evil they are facing than a mere human killer.

Publisher's Description

Welcome to East Salem. A deceptively sleepy town where ancient supernatural forces are being awakened.

A local high-school girl is found murdered in a park amid horse farms and the wealthy homes of northern Westchester County, New York. The shocking manner of her death intrigues forensic psychiatrist Dani Harris. All the suspects are teenagers who were at a party with the girl—yet none remembers what happened. Could one of them be a vicious killer? Or is something more sinister afoot—something tied to an ancient evil?

Across town, former NFL linebacker Tommy Gunderson finds his state-of-the-art security system has been breached by an elderly woman. Mumbling threats in Latin, she attacks him with an uncanny, preternatural strength. Before he has time to process the attack, someone close to him is implicated in the girl’s murder at the park. He agrees to help—and finds himself working with Dani, the only girl who could resist his charm years ago when they were in high school.

A heavy darkness is spreading. Yet a heavenly force is also at work.

Dani and Tommy suspect there’s more to the mystery than murder, more to their growing friendship than chance . . . and more to the evil they’re facing than a mere human killer.

Publisher's Weekly

Forensic psychiatrist Dani Harris teams with former football star and aspiring PI Tommy Gunderson to investigate the ritualistic murder of a girl in picturesque and wealthy East Salem, a fictional town in Westchester County, N.Y. Nightly visions, sleepwalking, and a midnight visit from a deranged woman prophesying in Latin hint at supernatural complications, while expensive private schools and corrupt lawyers try to stonewall the investigation. The rekindling of Dani and Tommy’s mutual unrequited high school crush develops in a series of painful teen-romance passages, but doesn’t distract too much from the pacing of the mystery. The book is loaded with overdramatic short sentences (“He turned on his flashlight. Felt with his hand. Something”) and the descriptions of technology are both obsessively detailed and frequently puzzling, but a truly chilling predator and some great snappy, funny dialogue will keep readers engaged. The conclusion sets the stage for two planned sequels. (Oct.) Copyright 2011 Reed Business Information.

Waking Hours is the first book in the East Salem trilogy.

Retired football player, now a budding private investigator, Tommy Gunderson, is determined to find out who murdered local girl Julie Lenord in what seems to be a ritual killing. Psychiatrist Dani Harris is drawn into the case through the DAs office. On a chance meeting, Dani runs into her high school crush Tommy, he convinces Dani to hire him to look into the case as her assistant.

As the two begin to dig deeper into Julies death, the investigation begins to takes several dark and disturbing turns. Dani begins to have vivid nightmares and finds herself waking up at 2:13 every night. Tommy encounters an old woman by his pond and raving about Satan.

I loved Tommy and Dani. They were very good as a couple. They worked so well together and the scenes with them working out their relationship was both heart-warming and heart-breaking.

These are new authors for me and I have to say that I was pretty impressed. I thought that they did a great job with all the storyline, the characters and the content. It was all well written and very believable. But really what drew me to this book was the old debate science vs faith. Dani & Tommy have several very well written discussions about the eerie things that are beginning to happen both to them and in the town. Tommy, being the one that has the deep faith, see these things as attacks from Satan, but Dani being the rational one trys to find logical explanations for these incidents, but the authors throw in things that she couldnt explain. I loved these twists, because I think thats how the enemy works. Using the natural world in unnatural ways.

The downside of this book I felt that while Tommy speaks of God and faith, for the most part he leaves prayer out. This bothers me very much because this book suggests that man can fight Satan in his own power. I hope that in the next book they will include the power of prayer and that the fight is really Gods.

Also there is a lot of techno talk about all the gadgets that Tommy buys. Sorry but I dont need an entire line to tell me its name or two paragraphs about what it can do. Keep it simple and move on.

Finally, a warning, if you find spooky & creepy disturbing this might not be the book for you, but if this subject matter doesn't bother you, I would encourage you to give this book a try.

Waking Hours is an exciting and suspenseful beginning to the East Salem Trilogy. I can't wait to begin reading the second book, which is unusual for me. Normally, I like to wait a while before jumping back into a suspenseful series.

I like both Dani and Tommy, the main female and male characters, because they are both intelligent and not given to impulsive decisions or behavior. I also enjoy the little romantic element to their relationship.

Waking Hours is a many-layered novel. It seems very well-balanced to me. There are some creepy and gory scenes, but they are written with logic and not just put there for sensationalization.

Waking Hours was an incredible read! The book swept me into the story from page one and I could not put it down. I am ready to barrel through the rest of the trilogy and am counting down the days to the final book. Ms. Wiehl uses such fantastic writing to make the reader feel like they're witnessing the story. It was so good at times I felt like I was watching a movie. The suspense was intense and the story had my hands sweating and my heart pounding. Definitely on my top 10 list of best books ever!

Good vs. evil is the core theme of this exciting book. Each character was interesting and believable. The more I learned about Dani and Tommy, the more invested I became in their survival. When I realized the book was close to ending I saw the second book was available and ordered it without hesitation. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story will go next. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a good read that will keep them thinking long after they've finished the book.
