This is a historical fiction novel that revolves around Nehemiah's return to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, restore order and justice in Israel, and draw the Jewish people back to a holy life. The fictional main character of Bani, Nehemiah's nephew, begins the story as a somewhat typical teen who enjoys the grandeur and comfort of his secular life in Artaxerxes' capital city of Susa and cannot understand why Nehemiah and the other Jews are so "hung-up" on Jerusalem. But over the course of the novel, Bani discovers for himself the unique and precious role that he, Nehemiah, the Jewish people, and the city of Jerusalem play as agents of God's Truth, Justice, and Mercy in a dark and vicious world. Well-written, this book offers up a fascinating slice of biblical history, filled with adventure and intrigue. And, even more importantly, Victory on the Walls shows young (and older) Christians the great contrast between the small pleasures of a comfortable secular life and the immense satisfaction, adventure, purpose and shout-out-loud JOY of a God-filled, holy life. This is a much needed story in our day when so many youths are snatched away from the life God has planned for them, not by force, but by ease. My boys were inspired to live boldly for God!!

Covering the story of Nehemiah's return to Jerusalem to lead the effort in rebuilding the wall, Mrs. Hyman's rendition is fairly close to the Biblical narrative in its basic facts. Unfortunately, the plot revolving around the main fictional character, Bani, is simple and rather predictable; my junior-high students found it rather uninteresting. Additionally, the book has multiple grammatical errors that are quite distracting. We will not be using this book with future students.
