Three years ago our family began a new Christmas tradition called the Jesse Tree. During advent, the 25 days preceding Christmas, we read a devotional and add a corresponding ornament to our 4 tree. Each devotional reveals the roots of Christ throughout scripture as represented by a key event or person. The object of this tradition is not only to show Gods plan of redemption throughout scripture but also to prepare our hearts for the coming Lord. I was content with the devotional that were using, however, I was very pleased to learn that Ann Voskamp wrote her own version of The Jesse Tree devotional entitled Unwrapping the Greatest Gift. If you follow her blog you may be familiar with her 2010 post - A Jesus Advent Celebration: A Jesse Tree Journey. This book draws on the same scriptures, expanding upon the stories and written with young children in mind.

Unwrapping the Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp is entirely Christ-focused and scripture-centered. Every day begins with an excerpt from the Holy Bible, New International Version. Once the audience has centered themselves in scripture, Ann unwraps the simple truths within the verses in a warm and loving way that will speak directly to even the youngest listener. If you have read One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp then you are familiar with Anns incredible gift of pen. If not, another popular book I could compare the style of writing with and the way it addresses its reader would be The Jesus Storybook Bible. Its a love letter written from God -- our God who has an unfailing, unbeatable, unstoppable love for us! Following the devotion/lesson are Thoughts to Discuss with your family and Family Activities that help emphasize the lesson, put our faith into action, or spur us to worship. Accompanying the text are soft yet colorful illustrations by artist Martina Peluso. Together they form a heart-shaping work.

My husband and I were searching for more meaning in the traditions surrounding Christmas, asking the same questions our young children were as we tried teaching them the significance of this holiday. It was then we stumbled upon Unwrapping the Greatest Gift and I was delighted. Ann Voskamp has captured the beauty of the big picture of Jesus' coming to earth, and wraps it up in a beautiful book for Children and adults alike. My only disappointment was that it was beyond what our children (ages 5,3,1) could comprehend - I ended up having to paraphrase the devotions. I do, though, look forward to using it in the future when the kids are old enough to follow it better.

Since our children were little we have been celebrating Advent with a Jesse tree in our home. It is a wonderful way to trace the lineage of Christ and instill understanding of that great heritage. In Ann Voskamp's newest book Unwrapping the Greatest Gift: A Family Celebration of Christmas, we can continue that tradition with our grandchildren at a whole new level.

The book is beautifully illustrated and the words are put together to reach deep into each one of our lives so that we can understand that this isn't only Christ's story but our story as well. What sets this book apart from what we have been doing isn't the basic information because that hasn't changed, it is the presentation and the added resources that make this a fabulous new tradition for families.

The timeline to participate in this is December 1st through December 25th. Each day begins with a reading of Scripture and then follows with a story that pertains to that passage. The readings are followed up with Thoughts to Discuss and Family Activities. But the awesomeness doesn't end there! You can also choose to download a Night Before Advent Hot Chocolate Party resources, Jesse Tree Coloring Pages for the little ones, and there are even Jesse Tree Ornaments that go along with each day's reading.

If you are looking for a way to make Christmas more about Christ and the gift He gave than the ones wrapped under the tree, pick a copy of this book up. You will have all you need to enjoy a family celebration of Christmas.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

I am so excited that I was able to review this amazing book! I have really been wanting to start doing Advent with my family, but had no idea what would be good for our family. Now I know there are other books out there that would also be good for us, but this one is almost perfect.

The devotions are spectacular and very eye-opening. They are a little long for our 2 year old, but I plan to summarize so it will be shorter for him when we start as a family. However the message is spot on for each one as well as in line with the Bible.

My favorite part however is the variety of family activities mentioned at the end of each devotion. They truly get the family involved together which I love (outside of doing the Christmas ornament for the Jesse tree and discussion)! Also the pictures are so beautiful!

I highly recommend this to families who are looking for a new way to prepare for Christmas not only individually, but as a family. It will change the entire family's outlook on the real meaning of Christmas and bring a fresh heart of thankfulness.

*(I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.)*

This was our first year celebrating Christmas with the Jesse tree and this book made it so much better. Thank you for such an amazing resource.
