    Book Review Undetected

    Dee Henderson

    May 22, 2014

I hadn't read a Dee Henderson book for several years. I eagerly anticipated this one and was not disappointed.

This author does an amazing job at developing her characters for her readers. They are relatable and likeable. They grow as the pages turn. This is particularly true of this book.

I lead a Bible study for the Widows Support Group at our church and I could definitely see reading this book together and discussing the process of dating and remarriage that Commander Mark Bishop goes through. But the struggle that Gina faces as she deals with her broken heart and then having to choose between two suitors would be healing and encouraging for anyone in the dating journey. This is a novel filled with valuable and usable lessons.

It is also a novel with some interesting science. I found myself wanting to learn more about the genius ideas that Gina was discovering. The way Mark encourages Gina to live into her gift is a message that could inspire many. I found it very encouraging that the "genius" was a woman, and that her area of expertise was science. I wish I could have found something like this when my daughters were younger to encourage them as they considered life careers.

The conversation that Mark has with Gina regarding contentedness is worth the price of the book.

The ending isn't sad, but I was sad that it was ending. I highly recommend this book and am proud to have it on my shelf.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The main characters are a highly intelligent 29-year old scientist, Gina Gray, and Mark Bishop, a Navy Commander and submarine captain 12 years Gina's senior. Gina has an incredible mind for math and science, and has come up with some new technology to help keep American submariners (like her brother Jeff, and Mark) safer in the waters. She cannot stop thinking about new applications for technology, and is always coming up with new, highly classified ideas that are useful for the Navy.

Mark lost his wife Melinda in a car accident a couple years prior, and is looking to start dating again. Gina's brother and Mark's friend, Jeff, suggests he pursue Gina, but Mark is not sure about the age gap. Gina begins dating someone else, and Mark soon realizes that he is, indeed, interesting in Gina. Is it too late? Is she really "the one" for him, even though she's dating someone else? At the same time as Gina is coming up with new technologies, tensions are flaring in Asian waters and Mark and Jeff are in the middle of it. Can Gina's technologies save her brother Jeff, Mark, and his crew?

This book had a lot of good action, and wasn't just a romance, which I enjoyed thoroughly. The book was kind of "military" in a way, since the language and writing wasn't especially eloquent or flowery, and the descriptions were mostly told through dialogue. Some of the romance dialogue was cheesy, but the story itself was good, and the futuristic technologies were also fun to consider. Like Dee Henderson's previous books, I also read through Undetected easily and quickly, and look forward to reading more books by the author.

Undetected grabbed me from the first scene.

Commander Mark Bishop was overseeing his crew at 450 feet deep as they guided the submarine back towards the base. At the end of a 90 day patrol, the USS Nevada just wanted to follow the whales and head home.

I had never thought I would find submarine life/warfare at all interesting, but I did when I was seeing it through the eyes of Mark Bishop. You can feel his weariness that comes with 90 days on alert, you understand his desire to see the sky and the surface of the ocean again after living underwater, and the responsibility that comes with this work weighs on your mind as you read.

Same with Gina Gray. Gina's oceanography and sonar research give her a tangible way to help keep her brother safe. Jeff Gray is stationed somewhere out there on the USS Seawolf, and his sister can best help him by applying her intellect to his field. Gina appreciates science because it challenges her. What she's coming to realize is that her discoveries soon challenge everyone. That's why the Navy has kept close track of her since she was a college student. In this case, her sonar research is shaking up Mark Bishop's world.

I love that Dee Henderson develops three things about her characters: their work, their relationships, and their theology.

Dee's character's always have something they're passionate about. They've got big dreams and grand goals. Whether it's Marcus O'Malley working in the Witness Security program or Mark Bishop commanding a nuclear armed submarine, we are treated to a few details of their chosen career. Dee's books are like a praise hymn to work at it's best and most fulfilling.

Whether it's a paragraph about the acoustical lab where Gina does her sonar comparison or a dialogue between Bishop and his XO, it expanded my mind a little bit. There are a lot of cool careers out there.

It's the same with the relationships. For these men and women, people come first. If Gina needs to pack up her Colorado apartment and doesn't want to go back there ever again, Jeff goes for her. If Mark see's one of his men having family trouble when they get back to shore, he assists in any way he can. Life is better when I know there's somebody I can call on, and somebody can call on me. I need that reminder.

And their theology... wrestling is the objective word here. Mark and Gina are both applying the knowledge of God to their chosen work and personal dilemmas, and it leads to a lot of good conversations.

How does a Christian who follows the Prince of Peace stand ready to deploy nuclear weapons?

How should Gina proceed with her science, when a new discovery could be used for evil purposes?

So... dive in to Undetected. I think you'll enjoy it. I did. So did a teenage friend I read it aloud with.

Thank you Bethany House for my review copy!

Ever wonder what it's like to be in a submarine?

Undetected dives deep into the world of a Navy submariner's life aboard the USS Nebraska with Commander Mark Bishop in charge. His love interest, Gina Gray, with her ever curious mind, advanced degrees, and ability to discover new scientific breakthroughs makes her an asset to the Navy.

With these two working together and developing a relationship we also see the complex issues Gina faces as she navigates through her love life. This is where Mark becomes an asset to Gina and guides her to accept God's engineering in her life.

It is refreshing to read such an intelligently written book with characters who depend on their faith in times of need. We get to hear their prayers and thoughts about God through this military drama.

Overall, it is a good book and well worth reading.

I was given a free copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for my review.
