I was drawn to this book after my husband recently went to an All Pro Dad conference where Mr. Dungy spoke. He had brought home The Uncommon Marriage, also by Mr. and Mrs. Dungy. This book makes either an excellent companion to that book or as a stand-alone devotional book for couples. It is divided into 16 weeks, with a devotion to do together as a couple each day. Each day is started with a Bible verse and then a discussion portion penned by either Mr. or Mrs. Dungy. Following the discussion section, is a section called Adventure Application which helps reinforce the days topic. Also, the book spends two weeks exploring what the book describes as The Core Principles of an Uncommon Marriage. These principles are:

    1. Look to the Bible as your guidebook and to Christ as your living example.

    2. Stay in sync spiritually.

    3. Manage expectations and appreciate your differences.

    4. Work as a team.

    5. Practice committed love.

    6. Communicate well and often.

    7. Dont run away from conflict.

    8. Support each other in serving others.

As you can see, all of the principles are important in a healthy, loving marriage. I could easily relate the personal stories in the discussion sections, even though Im not really a sports girl. I think this would be a great book for any married couple, whether they have been married for quite some time or are newlyweds. In fact, it would make a wonderful wedding present to help the couple get a great start be intentional about their marriage.

I received this book for free from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for an honest review. I was not obligated to write a positive review.

The Uncommon Marriage Adventure by Tony & Lauren Dungy with Nathan Whitaker Tyndale

    Marriage / Devotional

    ISBN 9781414383729

I give The Uncommon Marriage Adventure 5 stars. It is well written with life stories from the authors Tony & Lauren Dungy. It is a great tool to help with life, marriage and family life. Each devotion starts with a core principle and a scripture. Their are 96 core principles. The book is divided into 8 key groups that have worked well for them, their life and marriage. They touch on how the Bible and Christ are living examples on how to live, teamwork, committed love, communication, support and not running from conflict. At the end of each devotion they showed you how to apply the lesson to your life. I really enjoyed this part. On page 8 was a example of how to pray for your wife with scripture from John 3:16. I change it to pray for my hubby and found this to be so humbling. All the examples and prayer ideas are easy to add to your situation, I found them to be easy to use and beneficial. Through out the book there were references to the authors coaching and football career which I am clueless about, but I found they added a humble and honest aspect to their life experiences. They made the book seem more real.

I want to thank the author Tony & Lauren Dungy and Nathan Whitaker, the publisher Tyndale for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review. I am so grateful for their generosity.

This is an awesome devotional from an amazing Christian couple. This devotional goes back & forth with Tony providing the devotion some days & Lauren providing them on the other. It is always great to receive examples from successful couples on how they have made their marriage work over the years & on how being in the Word & prayer helped in the process. I have every Tony Dungy book so far & I look forward to additional books from both Tony & Lauren in the coming years.

What a refreshing read! My husband and I have thoroughly enjoyed coming together each night to read this insightful book from a godly & humble couple. The Dungys offer anecdotes, advice, encouragement, and motivation all stemming from their intentional focus of strengthening their marriage and focusing it on the Lord. We had some great, in-depth discussions from the Adventure Applications.

    SUMMARY:

Through 8 core principles, along with adventures in love, faith and growing closer to God and each other, Tony and Lauren Dungy share personal stories, key Bible verses, and prayers in this inspirational devotional designed to compliment and strengthen an uncommon marriage.

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Set up as a daily devotional, the 112 short devotions could be used daily, weekly or with any schedule that works. Trading between core practices (words of wisdom, thoughts, ideas) and the core principles (communication, love, support, team-work), the authors take turns sharing their points of view. I found the style very reader friendly, the Bible verses relevant to marriage, and the stories engaging but my favorite part was the application adventures- putting the principles into practice through different bonding activities/ conversation starters (discussions, spending time with the kids, reading the Bible together). Based on their earlier book, The Uncommon Marriage, this book stands alone fine but could probably be combined to make it an even stronger connection. Great as a Bible Study!
