Product Description

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane's bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

Publisher's Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography and the Indies Choice Adult Nonfiction Book of the Year award

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

"Unbroken is too much book to hope for: a hellride of a story in the grip of the one writer who can handle it. . . . When it comes to courage, charisma, and impossible adventure, few will ever match ’the boy terror of Torrance,’ and few but the author of Seabiscuit could tell his tale with such humanity and dexterity. Hillenbrand has given us a new national treasure."—Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run

"[A] masterfully told true story . . . nothing less than a marvel."Washingtonian

"Zamperini’s story is certainly one of the most remarkable survival tales ever recorded. What happened after that is equally remarkable."—Graydon Carter, Vanity Fair

"A tale of triumph and redemption . . . astonishingly detailed."O: The Oprah Magazine

I'm not aware if some of my older relatives who were in the military ever served in WW II. If they did, they never talked about before passing away. For this reason, this gave me a new history lesson of WW II from a perspective that I was totally unaware of.

When you see the obstacles that Louie had to face, it gives you a much greater appreciation of our servicemen, especially if they have seen combat and POW camps.

I am enjoying this book. My grandfather was in WWII and this story is eye opening to how our enemy treated our POWs. I never knew my grandfather. I highly recommend this for anyone who loves history and wants to see God's grace and mercy.

I read a lot of books and love biographies, but this one really stood out. I couldn't put it down, and kept thinking the good part must be over, but it maintains its intensity the whole way. This needs to be made into a movie! This book was a very well written account of an extremely engaging story. I recommend to all.

This book should be in every home in America. It is classic literature. I find the young author utterly amazing, in that she never met Louie until the book was published because of her invalid condition. Not only it is this book an amazing biography of Louie Zamparini, an Olympic track star, and a World War II war hero of several Purple Hearts, but it also gives us a much needed historical record of our devastating war in the Pacific with the devious, persistent Japanese. It is a book, not only of our survival and patriotism as a nation during this Greater Generation, but one that ultimately demonstrates how one can come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior in spite of all of the atrocities, and forgive those who so brutally attacked him. The last lesson is the most important victory of all----one's eternal salvation.
