Since I was a child, I have a had a deep love for mysteries. I grew up devouring series like Mandie, The Lily Adventures, and eventually, The Hardy Boys.

I was excited to have the opportunity to read and review a mystery novel by Carol Cox, Truth Be Told. Set in Arizona in the late 1800s, Truth Be Told is filled with mystery, murder, and a little bit of romance.

When Amelia Wagner inherits her fathers newspaper, she is determined to honor his legacy of reporting the truth. But what is the truth? Why are people disappearing? And is her new friend, Ben Stone, involved? Can Amelia solve the mystery before more people are hurt?

Filled with references to God, Scripture, and the call of Christians to ever be mindful of John 8:32, I appreciated the author pointing out that while all Christians are called serve God, that doesnt mean we are all called to be pastors or missionaries. We can serve God wherever we are, doing all for His Glory (1 Corinthians 10:31).

I did, however, feel that the author did not appropriately handle the recurring theme of alcohol consumption. While rightfully condemning drunkenness, Truth Be Told went further, seemingly embracing the viewpoint of the Temperance movement, which contrary to Scripture, condemned all consumption of alcohol.

Overall, Truth Be Told was an intriguing mystery, one which I am sure lovers of mystery will enjoy. I look forward to reading more of Coxs mysteries in the future. I would give Truth Be Told a B.

Truth Be Told keeps you on your toes, trying to keep up as it twists and turns and ... well it feels a bit like an old time roller coaster ride at your favourite country fair. It's a great little western story from a different angle than usual, and it's a sweet, clean romance that doesn't take overwhelm the rest of the story, which is appreciated on both counts.

Amelia Wagner arrives in Granite Springs, Arizona in 1893 to spend the summer with her father. She lives in the big city with her mother, who has been estranged from her husband for the last 10 years, but she always comes back to stay for the summer. She gets the feeling that he's not feeling well from his letters but he's not one to complain, and it turns out she's right. She decides to take over running the newspaper, at least for a while and that's when she stumbles onto the fact that her father has been investigating the Great Western Investment Company. At first glance, it seems to be on the up and up, and maybe it's a personal vendetta that's got him writing about the company but she has trouble believing that's the case.

Benjamin Stone is a new employee with the Great Western Investment Company. He has a lot to prove and he wants to go places in his career so he'll do anything to prove his loyalty to him employer ... as long as he believes the company is on the up and up. What will he do when he discovers evidence to the contrary? Or will he be able to prove that Amelia's vendetta against the company was for personal reasons and have them print a retraction? Better read it to find out!

I received this book from Bethany House and Graf-Martin for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own.

A woman determined to run her father's newspaper, The Granite Springs Gazette.

A man determined to help her, who is troubled with alcoholism.

A man destined to come into her life and make it far richer.

Truth be Told is a slow-paced historical set in Arizona, with some good South Western details.

The story revolves around Amelia, her newspaper, and a railroad company that is up to some shady deals.

The atmosphere of a struggling newspaper with one troubled employee, trying to find stories and keep the business afloat, is brought to life here.

If you're looking for a story with a woman who dares to dream and a man who comes alongside her and joins the dream, Truth be Told is a fine choice. If you also like a little 1800's progress in your stories, with trains and towns and lots of trouble moving West, then let the Truth be Told.

Thank you Bethany House for my review copy!

This book was great! I love novels with a Western theme and Truth Be Told definitely gave me a nice taste of it. I liked how Amelia was determined, even though it was not popular, to share the truth with people; no matter the cost. Truth Be Told was slightly funny, adventurous, and a book I totally enjoyed.
