Wow. Talk about suspense. Irene Hannon's "Trapped" is not a mystery-suspense cross, where some of the thrill is watered down in distracting the reader with red herrings until the final coup reveals the villain; this is a hard core, Alfred Hitchcock-style thriller, where we are privy to everything that is going on - from the villain's thoughts to the victim's to the detective's to that of the girl being used by the villain - watching seemingly innocent actions twist into something both terrible and terrifying.

Hannon's tale begins with the disappearance of Laura Griffith's sixteen-year-old half-sister, Darcy, who, fed up with rules, takes off into a winter storm leaving behind only a short note to say that she has gone. Not getting the response she wants from the local police, Laura turns to Phoenix Inc, a private investigative agency run by three men formerly in law-enforcement, including James Devlin, ex-ATF agent. Dev is quite taken with Laura, and, knowing how quickly teens on the street end up in prostitution and drugs, he throws himself into the investigation, hoping the multi-day storm is enough to keep Darcy from escaping St. Louis, at which point her chances of being found would grow notably slimmer. However, as the days stretch on, the trail grows colder, and their suspicions grow stronger that something sinister has happened to her.

While the description of the book leads one to believe that Dev and Laura are the focus of the novel, it is actually through Darcy's and the villain's point of view that we see most of the suspense. Without them, it would be a long, boring search (and just another mystery-suspense cross) before the intense finale. Hannon, however, weaves the suspense surrounding Darcy with the romance and tough PI work of Dev and Laura to form a well balanced novel. It starts out ominous and builds steadily from there, not remotely suffering from the middle-of-the-book-slump that so often plagues the genre.

Like Hitchcock's tradition of interspersing humor to cut the tension periodically and thus intensify the suspense without overdosing the audience, Hannon includes plenty of ribbing and good natured banter between employees of the Phoenix Inc, being a company formed by good friends. The developing romance, too, provides relief and a necessary humanity to the novel so that we really care what happens to Dev and Laura (in addition to Darcy, with whom our sympathies instinctively lie, being the victim); we see their motivations, their regrets, their uncertainties, and we watch them break down walls that they had erected over the years. In Darcy we see the most change: from a defiant youth to a broken, frightened girl, crying out to God, to an imperfect but loving sister who no longer takes her life for granted.

While I have enjoyed all of Hannon's books, this one has surpassed them all, reaching even beyond what I expected from Hannon's expert hand at the genre. While the romance may happen incredibly quickly and the Christian message be not as strong as in other novels, this is a clean, supreme example of what a suspense should be. 5 out of 5 stars!

Thank you Revell and Netgalley for providing me a free e-copy of this novel for the purpose of an honest review; I was not required to make it positive.

Another great suspense novel from Hannon!

I am really pleased with Trapped. In this series, it is my favorite thus far. As I probably already mentioned, the new Private Investigators point of view has been fascinating to read about. Hannon gets her research from real people, something that sets a realistic feel to all her suspense stories. This particular story has something of an edge to it, maybe because the entire novel takes place in such a short span of time, unlike its predecessor.

Laura and Dev are great leads, and they are good match for one another. We met Dev previously in Vanished, and even in the midst of Cal's story I liked his personality. Now, having gotten to know him a little better, I can say his character is admirable. I liked how Laura, without realizing it, challenged him to think. As a brief side note, a change I felt was brilliantly written is Darcy's, but I won't say more than that.

The best villains are the ones that tug on your compassion. The ones that were hurt at some point in their lives and instead of overcoming it they succumbed to their circumstances. This fact is what made Mark, the antagonist for Trapped, a fantastic villain. Don't misunderstand me- this guy is a psycho, but as a writer I admire the work Hannon put into crafting him.

All in all, this book is certainly in my top five of Hannon's suspense novels. Those familiar with her work will enjoy it. There is some violence, but descriptions are minor. I recommend to ages 16 and up.

How stimulating a story with the main characters continuing in this novel from the first titled Vanished! Plus there is a sneak peek at the third installment coming next summer titled, Deceived! The main characters of Nikki, Conner, Cal and Dev who all work for their own private investigating company remain as a team as they tackle another case.

At first glance it appears that Laura's half-sister Darcy has run away, but with a blizzard quickly shutting down the town Laura hopes to find her soon. Through an amazing amount of tenacity along with a plethora of trials, Darcy still isn't found but Laura and Devlin might be falling in love. However, the rule at the detective agency is no dating clients, so now much to the chagrin of Dev he has to wait and see where the relationship might go. While looking for Darcy thus far has turned up no leads, there seems to be a period of waiting that tests even the strong of heart.

Mark is a director of a children's day care, but is his appearance as a nice guy just a decoy? Mark is infatuated with redeeming young women in the hopes of salvation for himself. When his best laid plans start to unravel, does he become the prime suspect or is there an unknown character in the shadows? Faith works for Mark in the front office; she has a crush on him until her one unexpected visit finds him in questionable company.

Irene Hannon has written a masterpiece of suspense, thrills and romance. The author shows her exemplary skills with each page turning adventure. For me, reading Vanished helped me have the background of the characters in the story before reading Trapped. I don't know if a person can read one without the other. What I can say is that you will miss a suspenseful tale with riveting action if you don't read Vanished.

One of the best parts of the novel is the realism drawn into the characters that make up the novel. Though they are fictional in nature, their thoughts and actions seem very lifelike. The struggle with faith or the strength of faith is one of the differences in a couple of the players. No reader will be bored when reading the series, especially with the third book due out in under a year. Grab both Vanished and Trapped then prepare to get entangled in the threads of a well woven masterpiece!

Do you have a sibling who rubs you the wrong way? There are two sisters in this Christian fiction novel that experience a tug-of-war. What a compelling story! It contains a TON of suspense and a bit of romance. The pace is perfect--not a dip in the tension. Situations are true to life. The ending surprised me. I loved this book!

Characters are written so that the reader quickly connects. It's as if I really know them and can feel their struggles. I enjoyed reconnecting with Phoenix, Inc. private investigator Cal Burke and his bride, Moira. I admire the way this firm conducts business. This is one advantage the reader has by reading each book in a series. I look forward to reading the third in this series.

Although this novel is the second in a series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel.
