Terri5 Stars Out Of 5March 30, 2011TerriQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Transforming Prayer is an excellent book on developing your prayer life in a way that will awaken your heart and clarify a path to a new level of spiritual intimacy and transformation. This book is well written, easy to read and it will help you to overcome common barriers to praying effectively. Rather than presenting God with our long list of needs, requests, and wants, you will learn that "worship" based prayer is focusing on giving God honor and reverence and focusing of who He is and what His character is.
Prayer. . . .depending on God.
Prayerlessness. . . .our declaration of independence from God
God wants great things for His children, we usually settle for the good things. Everything pales in comparison to God wanting to reveal Himself to each of us. Seek His face in prayer, depend on God and be prepared to be blessed and changed by your encounter with God -

That is what the book Transforming Prayer is all about. Daniel Henderson focuses on a very vital part of the Christian life: prayer. In this book he helps the reader understand the difference between praying a list and praying a worship-based prayer. Henderson shows you how to: "Overcome common barriers to praying effectively, awaken your prayer life with simple, biblical patterns of prayer, [and] enjoy Spirit-led prayer sparked by Scripture passages." In other words, the reader is shown how to seek God's face rather than His hand. This is a very practical book for any Christian to read, especially new believers. Henderson writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. He helps the reader realize how rewarding a Christian's prayer life can be by giving Biblical guidance and a practical plan for taking their prayer life from "ordinary to extraordinary." While praying worship-based prayers is not new to me, there are many people who do not understand. This is a great tool to offer to Christians who are struggling in their prayer life. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

We often seeks God's hands, but we should also be seeking God's face. I am guilty, but there is hope. I have read many books and sermons on prayer, but this one really caused me to examine my pitiful prayer attempts.

This book reminded me of how wonderful it is when we pray scripture. It also gave me things to tell non-believers who think prayer is something that does or doesn't "work".
I love the personal accounts of people Henderson has included. It lets me know that so many others are realizing and experiencing the same thing about prayer - "The only enduring motive for prayer is that God is worthy to be sought." (page 156) -

"How Everything Changes When You Seek Gods Face"

When I first started to read this book I thought to myself. He sure has me pegged. The more I read the more I seem to find myself throughout the book. The book is written in three sections, The Vision for a Transformed Life; Best Practices Praying and Change Starts Here. With 5 Appendixes and a chapter by chapter Questions for Application and Discussion this book covers a vast area of how to pray.
It's all too real in this day and time. We sit in Church while the Pastor prays and do we really listen and seek Gods face through it or are we like most people who sit in Church and assume that others are praying while our mind is wandering around on everything but prayer. As the author states in the book many Wednesday night prayer services start out with prayer requests and soon ends up as a gossip session started about when prayer was asked for a certain individual. I have been in circles like that and it did stop my practice of going to them. There is so much in this book dealing with seeking the face of God and not His hand with many many scriptures for one to look up and refer to, along with several testimonies from individuals who like many at one time had a shallow prayer life to coming out of our Prayer closet. Many of us today pray without the full understanding of knowledge and worship in prayer. We say a 5 minute prayer and go on about out day. There are several excellent quotes throughout the book but I think my favorite is on pg 79; "We spend more prayer energy trying to keep sick Christians out of heaven then trying to keep lost people out of hell."
This is an excellent book for everyone, whether you are a teacher, Pastor or just an individual who's prayer life could stand a revamping. The glory of the Father must be the aim and end, the very soul and life of our prayer "pg 89". I know I will use this book again and do a deeper study of praying with the scriptures as Daniel Henderson teaches throughout.
I would like to thank Bethany House for graciously providing a free copy of this book. No positive review was expected and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
