I have just finished reading Then Sings My Soul, Special Edition, by Robert Morgan, and I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I enjoyed a nonfiction book so much! The book contains 150 favorite hymns and the stories behind them.

Whatever your favorite hymn, it can probably be found in this delightful book. From "Amazing Grace" to "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and everything in between, Then Sings My Soul has it all. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "I'll Fly Away," "Faith of Our Fathers," "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing"-- they are all there! Two pages are devoted to each hymn. One has the complete hymn exactly as it would appear in a hymnal, so that you can also sing the hymn directly from this book. The other page is devoted to a story about the author or the circumstances of the hymn's writing.

I don't know about you, but when I like something, I want to find out everything I can about it. And so for me, Then Sings My Soul was a delight. I've been reading the hymn-writers' names in the hymnal every week since I was a little girl, and I always wondered who these mysterious people were who could write such beautiful songs. And now, at last, I know! I also found Then Sings My Soul to be great for use during my devotions time.

Some books demand to be devoured in one sitting. When you finally turn the last page you feel as full as you do at five o'clock in the evening on Thanksgiving Day. Other books can only be enjoyed a bit at a time-like fine chocolate. Satisfying bite after satisfying bite. Think of "Then Sings My Soul" as the finest of Swiss chocolate. No, actually like a whole box of chocolates.

"Then Sings My Soul" is a collection of 150 of the best loved hymns of the past few centuries. Morgan gives us a glimpse into the lives of the very normal individuals that penned some of the greatest songs our world has heard. These hymns simply convey the truth of the Gospel, the wholeness of the Scriptures, and the greatness of our faith.

In this modern church age, many have not had the privilege of learning hymns such as Crosby's "Near the Cross" or Watts' "Alas! And Did My Savior My Savior Bleed". These are favorites of a time that has passed by, but hold truths that will remain for all eternity.

Some might find Then Sings My Soul boring or foreign or perhaps a little dated. I found it a refreshing ode to great hymn writers and hymns of yesteryear.

I ordered book Then Sings My Soul — Special Edition by Robert J. Morgan because I like singing and I like stories. This book connects both my hobbies. And the cover is very nice! Whole book is printed on ivory paper with special edging.

There is 150 hymns divided into five sections — Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Patriotic and Other Favourites. There are hymns like Amazing Grace, Because He Lives, Day by Day; Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee and many more. Each part is chronologicly ordered. Every hymn is on two pages, first one is music and words of whole hymn so if you can play an instrument, this book can be a songbook for you as well. It doesn't contain accords. Second page beginns with title, year of origin and Bible verse connected with hymn. Then there is description part where Robert Morgan make you acquainted with author of the hymn, his life and story behind the hymn. In the end there are three indices — ordered by title, author of hymn and first line of hymn.

This book is good for everyone who wants to know where does his favourite hymn comes from, who likes singing, musicians or who likes history in general.

As an elementary school teacher, choir director and a church music degree holder, Then Sings My Soul Special Edition is an excellent resource. It is important that people understand what they are singing, and to understand the reason behind a song's composition adds another level of understanding. This knowledge can help a vocalist to better communicate the message of a song and bring a deeper meaning to the ones participating in worship.

Robert J. Morgan tells the story of the composition and/or the composer of 150 hymns from common favourites to some that are almost unknown in some denominations. Each hymn story begins with a Scripture and a date. The significance of the date is not explained, but my guess is that it is the original publication date. It is also helpful that the book has the same common indexes found in a hymnal — alphabetical by song, by author/songwriter, and by first line. Some of the hymn lyrics date back to the early church in Rome and the Medieval Era and show us that the cry of the Christian's heart has remained unchanged throughout history. I appreciated the reintroduction of original verses that are no longer included in our hymnals. Yes, some of these verses would be deemed socially unacceptable today, but still carry the profound message of the gospel.

I enjoyed this book and will use it as a resource in the church and the classroom for years to come. For any Christian who has a song in their heart, this book will add harmony to their melody with the knowledge of how that song came to be.

I give this book 5 stars out of 5.
