've read all of Julie Klassen's books, and I've never been disappointed. If, like me, you've enjoyed the other books written by this author, you'll love The Tutor's Daughter. If you've never read a Klassen book, then this is a good one with which to begin your adventures. You don't have to read them in any particular order.

Ms. Klassen has an uncanny knack for drawing her readers right into the story. You will smell the rain, hear the waves crashing against the rocks, and experience the roller-coaster emotions of the tutor's daughter as she not only learns the secret of Ebbingford Manor, but also falls in love with an unlikely suitor.

The characters are just what I look for in this genre: interesting, believable for the historical period, and likable. The plot builds to a exciting climax and the book ends with a conclusion that is not only satisfying, but inspirational. What else can I say except it's absolutely delightful!

Julie does a phenomenal job in bringing the country of the Cornwall, England coast to life through her vivid descriptions. You can smell the salt of the sea mist as you walk along the rugged beach, feel the ocean breeze tug at your skirts, see and hear the waves threaten the very life of the coastal creatures. You learn much about the life of a tutor, how during the time of the novel they actually opened their home to young men who would board with the tutor and his family, or if circumstances and affluence afforded, the tutor would live in with the family of the boys he was teaching. In this case, he took his daughter with him. This sets Emma as neither a servant nor a guest, and you learn how life was for both the elite and the underdog.

As a young woman expecting to teach in a woman's academy with her aunt, Emma was well equipped to help her father in his work. Julie keeps the reader turning the pages, reading just one more chapter with her well placed and turns in the plot. The characters and plot is well developed and I think you will enjoy this as much as I did.

I enjoyed learning to know another piece of English history.

I received this book free from Baker Publishing House and Julie Warkentin for the purpose of writing a review. A positive critique was not required, only an honest one. The opinions stated are my own.

This delightful historical regency romance has more than a bit of the Gothic influence. Set at the Cornwall cliff-top manor home of a baronet, the story includes intrigue, mystery and suspense. Shipwrecks are common and smuggling is big business along the Cornish coast, so there are plenty of secrets in and around the Weston mansion.

Emma Smallwood accompanies her father when he takes the position of tutor to the two younger Weston boys. The two older sons were students at Smallwood Academy in years past, so old acquaintances are renewed. From the beginning, strange things happen. Cries in the night come from the north wing, which is forbidden territory to visitors. Ghostly music is heard and personal possessions go missing. Emma is challenged to find explanations and to discern who among the Westons can be trusted. It is an unexpectedly difficult task.

Readers will quickly align with Emma in her quest and will be put to the test to solve the various mysteries. Characters are realistic, but not always what they seem, which adds to the mystery. Emma is helped along by a friend who reminds her to pray and to trust God always.

This is an excellent novel for a book club, as it has a list of ten discussion questions at the end. Conversation would surely be lively, as there are so many distinctive characters, various motives and personalities.

I was given a free copy of this book by Bethany House Publishers for the purpose of review and am pleased to recommend it to teens and adults who enjoy historical fiction.

The Tutor's Daughter by Julie Klassen

Emma Smallwood had a nemesis. Now that her mother has passed and her father's boarding school hit hard times, they were going to the home of that very student. Her father would tutor his younger brother's at their manor. As much as she feared the older brother, she enjoyed the younger one. Perhaps neither would be home.

Henry Weston was no longer into pranks. He had responsibilities and family secrets to keep. The Smallwood's could not have arrived at their home during a worse time. Yet, he knew that Mr. Smallwood would be a good teacher for his younger step-brothers, Julian and Rowan.

This book was definitely a page turner and a book that was hard to put down. The Smallwood's arrival is not welcome, there are strange noises at night, odd occurrences, and Emma knows some of the family members are definitely hiding something.

The author keeps the reader guessing who is up to what and who can be trusted. And the characters personalities just come to life. The story takes place in Cornwall, giving insight to the dangers of ships along the rocky shores.
