I highly recommend The Substitute Guest. I gave my life to the Lord over 30 years ago while reading this book. I felt as though I had become one of the characters in the book that Christmas. I could hardly put the book down. I had known the Lord as a young child and had strayed away during my teen years. The prodigal was about to come home to the father, I had no idea it would be that day. I'd always loved a good love story but this was no ordinary love story. It was one of the best love stories that I'd ever read. I could hardly move from the spot where I was reading. I had not heard of Grace Livingston Hill until that day. There is only way I can explain what happened to me that day. It was as though I was there. When the stranger asked the family about their faith; they answered him with the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, They led him in the sinner's prayer and I prayed along with the stranger in that book. I became a new creature in Christ that Sunday evening. At the end of the prayer, I got up and gave thanks for my salvation. Then I immediately returned to the book to see what would happen at the end. It was awesome. I don't know how that book found its way to my house, but I'm glad it did.

A week or so later God offered me the opportunity to use my own gift of writing to give my testimony to share with others. This poem has been traveling in gospel tract more than I have physically. Here's my testimony that I dedicate to Ms. Grace Livingston Hill. I wrote and published it in 1980.

    My Substitute Guest

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. St. John 3:16

I'd heard it said over and over again- But not enough for me to repent of my sins

I'd say Jesus loves me and I'd keep on going- Yet He allowed me to live on another morning

Deep down I had known Him once before- He always seemed to knock on my heart's door

But I closed my mind- and I closed my heart; Jesus was calling but I sought Him not

I kept reading as my Bible lay- I said to myself I will read it one day

I didn't think what if that day never came- For I knew I'd have only me to blame

Then one day as I lay down to rest-I stumbled upon a novel...The Substitute Guest

It was about a family who believed in God: I read this book without a nod

This Christian family their love and trust -I knew for me it was a must

When the stranger in the book asked how this perfect love was so

They told him of Christ who so long ago died on the cross for all our sin

That we might open our hearts and let him come in- This stranger accepted Jesus and so did I

Because He lives I shall never die: For God knew my heart- but I didn't know the rest

It was He who came as My Substitute Guest; Now I read my Bible everyday

I try to live my life in a Christlike way: I never have to wipe my Bible for dust

For reading God's Word is a daily must- I thank Him for being so loving to me

For opening my eyes when I could not see -For Christ knew my heart but I didn't know the rest

It was He who came as My Substitute Guest

Since writing this gospel tract , God has blessed me to write three books. I am honored to write this review on the The Substitute Guest. Ms. Hill's book was copyrighted in 1936, but the power of the words in this book are still anointed for today. I'm certain that you can understand when I say this book changed my life and has inspired me in more ways than I have space to mention. I would not only

recommend this book to a friend but to the world. Ms. Hill has a genuine heart of evangelism.

I have a special spot in my heart for Grace Livingston Hill books. My grandmother loved scouring flea markets and book barns for copies of her books. Before my grandma died, I believe she collected FIVE full sets of GLH books!

I have read many of them, but not all, and I have enjoyed seeing them becoming available for my Kindle.

Thanks to NetGalley, I was able to read The Substitute Guest, a tender story set around Christmastime, making for a warm, cozy read in these fall and winter months. The Substitute Guest clearly shows the difference between a family who loves and follows the Lord and the lost and lonely world. Their shining testimony is what makes a seeking young lawyer, stranded in the snow on Christmas, see his own need for Christ and the change He makes in our life when we receive Him.

Although The Substitute Guest was written over 60 years ago and some of the language, convictions, and Biblical truth will be considered 'dated' and 'old-fashioned' by some, I found the story refreshingly honest and sweet.

*I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given, and all thoughts are 100% mine.*

When I was a young teenager my Aunt Lou introduced me to Grace Livingston Hill books by passing them on to me. I fell in love with this author right from the start. This book "The Substitute Guest was my favorite of all times. CBC had a good sell on this book at the time of purchase. And I love the new update of the book too. The cover was changed to make the book look more appealing and it was bigger too then a normal small paper back. If you want a good read....this is the book....The Substitute Guest. You will fall in love with this authors's writing. She has so many to read and they are all good. I just happened to love this story the best and remember it as a teenager. I just ordered several more of her books. When you find a good author and a good price.....they are worth reading again and again.
