Publisher's Description

The waves lap dangerously close to the abandoned baby--abandoned by the Molokai leper colony of the late 1800s.

That baby will be at the center of an alternately tense and bittersweet romantic struggle between Eden Derrington and Rafe Easton. Eden and Rafe are in love, but Baby Kip may very well endanger their future together.

It's two generations after the on-fire missionaries have arrived on the Hawaiian Islands, and the descendants of those missionaries are drifting into complacency and materialism. The generational plots and subplots masterfully woven throughout this first in the "Dawn of Hawaii" trilogy will leave the reader yearning for the second and third books, coming in 2011 and 2012.

In The Spoils of Eden by Linda Lee Chaikin, Eden Derrington is forced to make difficult decisions as she seeks God’s direction for her life in nineteenth-century Hawaii. Personal and professional dilemmas keep readers in suspense and keep Eden struggling to rely on God.

Eden breaks off her engagement with long-time love Rafe Easton in order to serve the lepers on Molokai with her father once he returns from his medical travels. Now that Dr. Derrington is home, Eden may be forced to choose between the men she loves. Adding to their strained relationship is Rafe’s plan to adopt Kip, a young boy from the leper colony. As Eden tries to navigate her relationship with Rafe, she also discovers tension within her family. Too many people are keeping secrets, and Eden begins to wonder if there is a darker side to the Derringtons.

The lush tropical backdrop of this novel will leave readers spellbound. Historical details add credibility to the story, but the volume of characters is hard to keep straight without frequently referencing the family tree. The complicated relationship between Eden and Rafe will leave readers frustrated along with them and eager for the next two books in the Dawn of Hawaii series.

While spiritual truths sometimes seem tacked on to the ends of chapters, throughout the novel Eden lives out the command in Proverbs 3:5 to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” She continually surrenders her worries to the Father, knowing that his ways are better than her own. This novel has enough suspense, romance, and history to interest a wide range of readers. I particularly recommend The Spoils of Eden for women of all ages. – Andrea Walker, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

When Rafe Easton rescues an infant from the forbidden island of Molokai in Hawaii, he is convinced that the boy is meant to be his. Doing the right thing may cost him more than he is wiling to pay, but he is confident that his fiance Eden Derrington, will not only understand but support his decision. Forced to lie and say that little Kip is his nephew, he brings Kip to his home in Hanalei and makes his a part of his life.

Eden Derrington is trying to accomplish too much in too little time. Juggling her impending marriage to Rafe and her interest in helping her father Jerome, establish a new clinic for the lepers of Molokai; she also seeks the truth about her mother's fate. Will she loose Rafe's love even as she discovers what it mean to be Dr. Jerome's daughter? And will the questions she has about her mother Rebecca, ever be answered satisfactorily?

The only thing I knew about Hawaii before reading this was that they became a state in 1959 and that they have a tropical climate. But this novel taught me so much more about the state's rich history, and it's first missionaries who gave everything to a people that so desperately needed the word of God. Whether you know a lot or a little about the last state to join the Union, Chaikin weaves a tale of intrigue and mystery that is sure to capture you interest from the very first page.

    My Thoughts

The Spoils of Eden_by Linda Lee Chaikin

The Dawn of Hawaii Series_..Book One

Rafe Easton and Eden Derrington have been in love since a very early age, and Rafe would love to get married soon, but Eden wants to wait because has her heart set on helping her father search for a cure for leprosy. And Eden's mother living away from the family because she has leprosy is the reason for Eden wanting to find the cure.

In the meantime Rafe rescues an abandoned baby from the leper's island in Hawaii and is determined to adopt him, raising the baby as his own child. That is if the Drs in Hawaii don't take him first, because the threat of leprosy is a danger to all.

And so the drama of life between Rafe and Eden begins. As Eden works with her dad and Rafe strives to do whatever possible to make sure no one touches his new son, what will happen to their relationship?

The early 1900 Hawaiian setting of this story was very interesting and the author's research and detailed writing makes the story seem real. We as readers will know the people, the islands, weather, as well and live on the islands when we finish this series of books.

As we read the journey of these complex characters and a plot that is detailed in developing as well, we find these books are not a fast read, but I enjoyed this writing technique though because the characters seemed to cling to me more, and I got to know them in a more personal way.

I am really looking forward to the other books in this series. This is my first book by Linda Lee Chaikin, and I'm glad I found a new favorite author!

This book way generously provided to me by Moody Publishing. I was not obligated to write a positive review of this book. The review, and opinions in the book are completely mine.

If you long to get away from your everyday life and travel to a lush, tropical, paradise but can't afford it, I urge you to pick up this book! Ms. Chaikin has an amazing talent to weave words in such a way as to make you feel as though you are truly walking the shores of Hawaii, listening to the waves crashing on the white beaches, hearing the exotic birds twittering all around, smelling the gardenias and other fragrant flowers, and feeling the kiss of wind on your face. Rich in the history of 1891 Hawaii, Ms. Chaikin has also created deep, interesting and believable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the members of the Derrington and Easton families. I fell in love with some and loathed others, all the while cheering for the hero and heroine, Eden and Rafe, to admit their love for one another and ride off into the sunset together. But troubles abound, as well as treachery, greed, and intrigue. My heart broke more than once for Eden and her father as they struggled to find a cure for the Leprosy that stole Eden's mother from them. All together, a moving exotic drama that I guarantee will sweep you away to another place and time and leave you anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!
