I totally agree with Eugene Peterson. This book will go down in history as a Christian classic. It is fiction so you have to read it with your imagination. It is not meant to be read or interpreted as formal doctrine or theology. It is simply meant to stretch your interpretation of doctrine and religious traditions. I have walked this walk of faith in Christ for thirty years and I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone, including young Christians.

I bought this book after hearing about it in weekly Bible Study. I heard that some people criticized it, but after reading through it, I cannot find any fault in it. It is fiction, Christian fiction, with an excellent story of forgiveness, redemption, and love. Some people put God "in a box" to fit their perception of him. The author of "The Shack" shows us that all of our perceptions are just that - perceptions. God is love.

I plan to read this book again, more slowly, to make sure that I did not miss something. This book has made me want to buy one for all of my family members to read. As a believer, I seek a relationship with the Father through His word - the Holy Bible. As a believer, I read this book, and I was pleasantly surprised and very much entertained.

I recommend this book of Christian fiction. It is something that I will not forget. If you buy it and read it, you will not forget it either. There are many kernels of wisdom in "The Shack", and many comforting thoughts, as well.

Many days we, as Christians, place God in our own borders and say THIS IS GOD... Sadly, this is dangerous. God tells us in His Word, His ways are not our ways. So in saying this, I LOVED this book. Is God embodied in my own defined borders? NO. Is the LOVE, MERCY and GRACE he calls us to embrace as we walk with Him evident in the words of this book, ABSOLUTELY! Why would any person seek a relationship with someone if we knew everything about them? Don't you still enjoy the mystery of getting to know your spouse? Realizing the amazing person your child is developing into that you never saw? and seeing that God's mercies are greater than the borders you once held Him in? Do I take this book as necessary as the Word of God? Not particularly, but do I LOVE the way that the concepts and truths of the Holy Bible are shown in the story of how God beckons to meet our needs in the season we find ourselves? Aboslutely!

I read this book as I was trying to forgive my own father for hurts that cut me as deeply as Mack's father. Through God's mercy displayed in the book, prayers with God and my loving husband, I was able to forgive.

I wouldn't take the book as fact, but if you are able to extend the borders that you have placed on God, it is a good read to stretch your mind beyond itself.

There have been many good books in the past, such as Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, Hurnard's Hinds Feet on High Places, Lewis's Mere Christianity, Schaffer's A Christian Manifesto that have been the right book for the era in which they were written. Young's The Shack is the foremost incredibly impacting book of the early part of this century. As He depicts Jesus in His role as the Son of Man and intimately intwined in the mysterious Trinity, He does what the Bible originally did: show us that the God of exacting justice is the same God that is the God of mercy we do not deserve. Young is careful to be true to all aspects of Biblical theology while certainly questioning aspects of religion that so many have been taught (in error). These questions are understandably difficult for those raised in the church who choose not to search out the scriptures for themselves but rather rely upon what they were taught by a teacher they held in high esteem. The Shack has given many people the opportunity to follow Jesus instead of the "church organization". While that may be highly offensive to those who hold the church organization in higher esteem than Jesus, it is not offensive to Jesus. Jesus said "Follow Me". The Shack supports the Biblical teaching of Jesus and creates an opportunity for who recognize their need for Jesus to come directly to Him, receive the forgiveness of His propitiation through the shedding of His blood on the cross. This is an inspired book which I would highly recommend.

Couldn't put the book down. The author keeps you on the edge of your seat and with each turn of the page brings home his point. Keeps you thinking for a long time.
