Davis Bunn's The Patmos Deception is a thrilling combination of ancient history, illegal activity, and modern crises. Carey Mathers arrives in Greece to discover her job at the Institute of Antiquities has been terminated, along with the rest of the Institute - another victim of the Greek financial crisis. However, her childhood friend Nick Hennessy, a journalist presently based out of Paris, is offered the chance of a lifetime: to investigate a series of disappearing Greek antiquities, and Carey is exactly what he needs for the job. Meanwhile, on the small island of Patmos, Dimitri Rubinos, who had been making his living off his tourist boat until the financial crisis, suddenly finds himself caught up in an opportunity far more dangerous than it seemed. As the plot proves far deeper than they were initially anticipating, with the three have any hope of riding the waves to safety?

Though the story is definitely suspenseful, there are plenty moments to relax and soak up Greece - the islands, the sea, the food, the history. While I knew that Greece rich with history and lore, especially biblical, I knew very few specifics - like about the apostle John being banished to the island of Patmos. The author does a good job bringing the history to the the present - making it relevant and interesting, connecting it to places we could really go.

I really liked Dimitri; he is put in a tough position, consults his family for wisdom, and makes a choice - not always the best choice, but he goes about it in an intelligent and wise way. He is smart. Sure, he's dealing in the illegal, but he recognizes when something is plain wrong. I can just feel the tension as he's trying to keep all the balls in the air - the bad guys, the state police, his people who are just trying to survive. The moment one drops, his life is forfeit. It's a terrible position, but well-written, so the reader can readily empathize.

While there are certainly hints of romantic tension, I liked that it's not a major competition between the men who will win the girl; they are not so foolish as to jeopardize their lives by fighting over her instead of focusing on the bad guys. Carey, instead, acts as a foil to show them the emptiness in their lives that can only be filled by God, not a woman, or danger, or high living. And at the same time, the men help point Carey in the right direction too - towards God - and the path she needs to follow.

I can only assume there is a book to follow - it is entirely too cruel leaving such loose ends, even if it is not actually a cliff-hanger. I look forward to reading it and seeing where Carey, Nick, and Dimitri end up! 4.5 stars!

Seriously good. Bunn immerses his readers into the Greek culture from the very first page. Sights, sounds, emotions -- we feel it all right along with Carey as she soaks in her first impression of the country. I love how she gets swept away by a large, boisterous and definitely opinionated Greek family. They nearly smother her but it's just what she needs when she first arrives and they definitely provide some levity in an otherwise tense plot.

Nick has perfected the cool detachment of a seasoned journalist. He's ready to make his mark in his chosen profession and approaches his assignment with passionate single-mindedness. Such a contrast to Carey's wide-eyed wonder. Love watching the two play off each other and even though Carey is somewhat naive, she can hold her own with Nick. Familiarity from growing up together certainly helps.

And then there's Dimitri whose life is as far removed from the Americans as you can get. He and his family are struggling to survive after the collapse of the Greek economy. His story line is fascinating and plunges the reader into intrigue and danger. The author expertly weaves a complicated plot with some serious twists and turns that kept me on my toes. And I really appreciated the vibrant spiritual thread that builds to a startling conclusion. My only complaint with The Patmos Deception is that it ended...and with a few cliff hangers (including the romantic kind) that will hopefully be cleared up in the next book.

The Patmos Deception, by Davis Bunn

Davis Bunn is one of my favorite authors of Christian fiction. When I learned about his new book, The Patmos Deception, I could hardly wait for my copy to arrive and get busy reading. And as expected, I was not disappointed. After all, Patmos, a part of the Greek islands, is where the Apostle John was exiled in AD 95 and where he had his Apocalypse vision and wrote the book of Revelation. It was fascinating to read a story that took place on an island that has so much biblical history.

Nick Hennessy, an investigative reporter, is secretly hired by the assistant director of an organization called World Heritage Sites, to investigate the disappearance of historical and artistic icons from the Greek islands. Needing an expert in Grecian antiquities, Nick hires Carey Mathers, a forensic archaeologist who is also a long-time friend.

The third main character is Dimitri Rubinos, who lives on the island of Patmos, owner of a charter boat business that is about to go under, as most of the other businesses on Patmos already had, due to the economic crisis in Greece. Desperate to earn enough money to support his aging father and grandmother and to save his business, Dimitri agrees to use his boat to pick up and deliver cargo for an extremely wealthy English man. At the time, Dimitri thought that what the cargo actually was made little difference to him. By accident, he discovered that it made a great deal of difference because this cargo made him a smuggler. What could he do to make good come of this? He didnt know, but he would figure it out; he would make a plan. Then, Dimitri discovers that the investigation by Nick and Carey has led them to him!

Davis Bunn is a real storyteller. I really like how this story starts out with mystery, then danger creeps in, and then the level of suspense grows and grows with every turn of a page. I got so caught up in the story that I just could not put the book down until I knew the ending! I would recommend it to anyone. Also, it is appropriate for church libraries.
