Petersheim weaves a tale of raw emotion tangled with deep regrets and the choice to forgive and love or hold onto the anger and stay safely locked away in one's own prison. Can Rhoda, head midwife of Hopen Haus, come to grips with the past when it stares her in the face, literally? Amelia, a young pregnant woman, stirs up feelings and memories in Rhoda like no other young mother before. While Rhoda longs for love, the road to healing may be too painful. What part do Looper, Wilbur,

Thomas, and Alice all play in this drama? More importantly, will Rhoda allow God to do His healing work, or will she close the door on Him as she has so many times in the past?

The story starts slowly but builds in intensity until the tension becomes nail-biting. The narrative weaves back and forth between different narrators which makes the reader pay special attention to see how the author will sew it all back together.

    SUMMARY:

Having a romantic interest in her professor, as well as needing money to finish her degree, Beth Winslow accepts the invitation to be a surrogate mother. When the results suggest a possible abnormality in the baby, the professor and his wife decide to terminate the pregnancy yet Beth discovers she already loves this child. Running to Hopen Haus, a home for unwed mothers nestled deep in a Mennonite community, Beth assumes the identity of Rhoda Mummau, a midwife at Hopen Haus.

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Having just finished and enjoyed The Outcast by Jolina Petersheim, I was excited to have the chance to read The Midwife. A deeply moving story, it was well written as the story transitioned between characters and time frames. Though easy to have been lost, the novel read seamlessly and was cohesive in all aspects. Coupled with her own current personal loss, the author weaves such a sentimental tale that I just couldn't put it down. Hard decisions, sorrowful circumstances, troubled actions, difficult emotions and unresolved regrets all contribute to a heart-stirring read.

    RATING:

    5 (out of 5) pennies

The Midwife by Jolina Petersheim is the very unique story of the head midwife of a Mennonite home for pregnant girls. Rhoda Mammau efficiently runs Hopen Haus while maintaining emotional distance from the other midwives and their charges. The girls living at Hopen Haus come from various backgrounds and all are seeking refuge through their pregnancies. The book also chronicles the experiences of a young woman who becomes a surrogate for her professor/ boss and his wife. The story of Beth is one from years ago while the story of Rhoda is in the present. Petersheim also brings in a host of other characters from the pregnant girls to others working at Hopen Haus and even someone from Rhoda's past. One of the girls named Amelia becomes an important part of this story.

If this review comes across as vague it is just because I don't want to give anything away! This whole story is completely interwoven and almost every detail becomes important later in the book. These connecting stories moved fairly quickly with lots of details and several developed characters. I enjoyed the story line and the style of writing although I will say it was almost all too neatly connected in the end. I don't want to discourage your from reading this fiction at all because it is a pleasant read. Just know at the end you may shake your head a little as I did!

Because Hopen Haus is separate from any current Mennonite communities, the Plain lifestyle is represented and a definite piece of the story but not an overwhelming factor (if that even makes sense!). Petersheim's roots with the Pennsylvania Dutch community lends authenticity to her story. A quick look at her website shows that she has written another book called The Outcast which I hope to read soon. The Midwife was a perfect read on the beach during our recent vacation.

Beth is a graduate student for Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick when he asks her to be the surrogate for he and his wife, who must have a complete hysterectomy. This is their only chance to have a child. Beth agrees, and becomes pregnant with the Fitzpatrick's baby. But when genetic testing shows that the baby may have a problem, she flees because the genetic parents want the baby aborted. Beth goes to a Mennonite home for unwed mothers and after her daughter is born, she remains and becomes a midwife.

I really enjoyed this novel. It captured my attention and was hard to put down. It is well written and kept my interest. I cannot give more details without giving away the story, but it is a page turner.

In the first half of The Midwife was just slow for me. With the different people in the first person had me confused. Once I finally caught on I could not stop turning the pages. So many revelations that I did not see coming.

By the end of the book, I realized that it is a great read! So many lessons to learn. I continued on to read the Author's note and cried with her. Boy, do I know what she was talking about. Heartbreaking.

    4 1/2 stars.
