The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone, was written by best-selling author and film director, Alex Kendrick, along with Bill Muir from Youth for Christ.

Billy's father, Dr. Michael Stone, is an archaeologist. He has heard the legend of a lost medallion, made of gold with a special stone in the center. It is said to have great powers and was lost on Aumakua Island about 200 years ago. Many don't believe the medallion exists, but Dr. Stone does and he has searched for it his entire life. After his wife died, he continued his search, to the detriment of his finances. Broke and desperate, he needs to find the medallion now.

Billy believes the legend, also. Before his mother died, she gave him a stone she claimed came from the legendary medallion. The medallion has no special powers without the stone. Billy wants to join his father's archeological dig so he can find the missing medallion but is not permitted to. So he searches for it on his own.

But Billy and his father aren't the only ones looking for it. Cobb, a descendant of Cobra, wants the medallion very badly. 200 years ago, when King Keili was in power on Aumakua Island, Cobra tried in vain many times to overtake the islanders and steal the medallion. But always, the its power stopped him from doing so. Cobra succeeded in killing King Keili, but not before the stone flew out of it (the same stone Billy now has in his possession) and the king had the opportunity to bury the medallion.

With the use of a metal detector, Billy and his friend, Allie, find the missing medallion. He then takes out the stone his mother gave him and it inserts itself into the medallion. Billy thinks all of his and his dad's troubles are now over, but that's not the case. He and Allie go back to show Billy's dad the treasure, only to find Billy's dad tied up in a chair, guarded by two men. When Billy flashes the medallion, the two men try to grab it. Before they can do so, Billy says, "I wish this had never happened." This seemingly innocent wish transports he and Allie 200 years back in time to the Island of Aumakua, to a time when the medallion is still missing.

Now Billy and Allie have a chance to change the past to change the future, but will their efforts make things better or worse?

What I Like: The children in the story are searching for a medallion that has special powers. But, they learn as they go along that the medallion's true power comes from the Source of all power, and the person who possesses the medallion must have a clean heart in order for the power to manifest itself. An evil person can not harness the medallion's power. They also learn every person is a treasure to God.

What I dislike: This is a good story, with a good message, but I had a few issues with it. For one thing, when the children were transported back in time, the authors have the speakers talking in modern-day slang. I don't think that would be appropriate to the time period.

There were a couple of discrepancies in the text. When Billy goes back in time, he has a wooden staff with him that belonged to someone who had lived in that area 200 years ago. The staff is mentioned when the kids first show up on the island in the past, but when the kids are forced to jump off a cliff, I had to wonder what had happened to the staff. It wasn't mentioned in the text for quite a few pages after that. I would think it would have been very difficult for Billy to have recovered the staff, but no mention was ever made of that.

I also found a few typos in the text.

    Overall Rating: Good.

A great book for your tween

This book is a great read for your tween. I think boys and girls alike would enjoy this book full of adventure, tension and brave kids.

I have not seen the movie but now I would like to. The neat thing about this book is that there are QR codes throughout so the reader can scan it on their phone and then watch that clip from the movie. Very cool.

The book does a great job of showing where true strength lies, and who give us strength and courage. What a challenge for todays tweens as they are trying desperately to find themselves in a world that is telling them they have to be a certain way to fit in. I don't know about you but I really don't want my daughter to fit in with the world, I want her to shine with the love of Jesus and this book subtly shows kids that is what really matters.

If you have a tween I highly recommend this book. Read it with them so you can discuss what is happening and how they can apply it to their lives.

A copy of this book was given to me by the publisher through the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance in exchange for an honest review.

I love it when I come across a book for young teens that really excites me in such a way that it goes simply beyond reading an action adventure book. In The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone by talented authors Bill Muir and Alex Kendrick (Fireproof, Courageous), the reader is truly in for an unforgettable experience that goes beyond your typical book. This takes the reader not only into a great story but utilizes the advancements in QR technology codes that are scattered throughout the book to link them up to video clips from the movie due out soon. This makes the adventure all the more real because you no longer have to imagine whats happening at different parts of the story, but you can actually catch glimpses into the movie while reading the book. It's like truly getting the best of both worlds, movie and book quite literally rolled into one.

The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone introduces us to the main character, Billy Stone who is the son of an archaeologist Dr. Michael Stone who has spent his entire life searching for the lost medallion that holds unlimited power to whomever possesses the item. Following a series of clues left behind from Billy's mother who was a descendant of the line of Kings that originally owned the medallion at one point, it was buried and no one has ever found it until now. Billy is excited to show his father the medallion so that their relationship can be restored since he has been so consumed with his search and has left his son as merely an afterthought.

But like all good action adventures, it wouldn't be complete without a villain, and none is greater than Mr. Cobb, a wealthy man who has slowly been buying up all rights on the island that the Stones live on. Now they are forcing the expedition for the search of the medallion to be shut down. When Mr. Cobb learns that Billy has discovered the medallion, he uses the love of his father to draw him into the open in hopes of gaining possession of the medallion for his own greed. Only Billy doesn't realize that the holder of the medallion simply has to make a wish and things begin to happen but not like he expected. It is here that the adventure takes an unexpected turn and one you'll have to find out about by picking up this book.

I received The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone by Bill Muir and Alex Kendrick compliments of B and H Publishing Group for Kids and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I received no monetary compensation for a favorable review. This is such a great book not just for young teens but I even enjoyed this one and can't wait for the DVD release later in August at your local retailer. This did come to theaters in March of 2013 but most missed it like myself. Now you can gain a deeper appreciation for the story by picking this wonderful hardcover book up for your teen. It even contains some great color stills from the movie in the center of the book. I hands down rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.
