I can honestly say that "The Keeper" is my favorite contemporary Amish novel that I have read to date. The reason? The characters are simply fantastic! The members of the Lapp family are quirky, unique, lovable, and at times downright hilarious in their thinking and their actions, and Fisher has woven their lives together with expertise. One scene where slightly over-weight Sadie sends her pair of Spanx flying out the window literally left me with tears running down my cheeks in laughter. I won't say more as I don't want to give it away, but several Sadie scenes had me in stitches.

From the moment I picked up this book, I became caught up in their lives and found the book impossible to put down. The book breathes with laughter, heart-break, deep wisdom, hope. As the author gradually allowed me to peek under the characters' interesting exteriors, I discovered hearts that beat with all the dreams and insecurities we all wrestle with at times. God's love absolutely shines through this book, and I came to the last page sad to leave the world of the Windmill Farm. I highly anticipate returning to the farm in book two of the series!

I highly recommend this book, and give it 5 out of 5 stars. I laughed, I cried - I loved it. Readers who enjoy Amish fiction should go purchase this one, because they will not be disappointed!

A pure delight! I'm trying to figure out a way to convey the magic in this book. It's more a family tale than a traditional hero/heroine romantic story. Fisher shares equal time amongst the most engaging characters and frankly -- M.K. totally steals the show! She's Julia's eleven-year-old sister. She has the verbosity of Anne Shirley, the adventurous spirit of Pippi Longstocking and the quick wit of Hermione Granger -- what a hoot! And don't get me started on Uncle Hank...or sweet, simple Menno...or Stern Fern...gracious she needs a whole review on her own! Let's just say this is one Amish family the likes of which you've never met between the pages of a book before.

Okay, so I've established that the characterization in The Keeper is stellar. Well, so is the plot and while there is a lot going on in the story, Julia's romance (or lack thereof) is one of the common threads that binds everything together. But there's a mystery too -- and heart-rending drama -- not to mention laughter in some of the toughest places. And a surprise that will steal your breath away and a conclusion that will leave you changed forever. The Keeper is definitely a keeper! And bonus -- it's the first of a series and the whole family will be back again in August 2012 (The Haven) and January 2013 (The Lesson).

When I first got this book, I had no idea what "The Keeper" was referring to. When I found out it was about a beekeeper who visits Amish farms so that his bees can pollinate their orchards, I was fascinated. I had never heard of that before, and I was interested in the Bee Man's history.

The story is told from the point of view of each of the many characters in this book, but it was fairly easy to keep everything straight. I always enjoy getting to see what is happening from the perspectives of both of the main characters, and this book took that a step farther by including the other characters. I especially liked that the 'voice' of M.K. was just right for an eleven year old.

I enjoyed The Keeper very much. Amish fiction as a genre is definitely growing on me, and this book helped that cause a lot. It was easy to read, it kept my interest, and I liked the characters. The ending was bittersweet (and pretty difficult for me to read), but I respect the author for deciding to have the story go that way.

I look forward to reading more about the Lapp family from Stoney Ridge in the next books in this series.

This review was written for Keeper, The: A Novel - eBook.
What a really cool story! I loved the element of the bees and all of the talk of beekeeping. I thought the characters were great and have a special affection for Rome.

The way that this story wrapped itself up gave me goosebumps. It actually snuck up on me. I had given thought to what might happen to Poppa Lapp early on in the book but didn't see the ending coming at all.

This was a great story and I enjoyed reading it a lot. Well done Ms. Woods-Fisher! I highly recommend it!

Suzanne Woods Fisher is one of the best writers of Amish fiction today and this is the start to another great series. Her Amish community is a kinder, gentler type of setting but her writing shows us that members of the Amish community are just like the rest of us. Her characters are never perfect or condescending in their faith or how they treat others. They make mistakes just like everyone else.

Julia is the lead in this installment, but the story is just as much about Rome (the beekeeper), and Julia's family, including her sisters and father. And we can't forget the mysterious Fern, the housekeeper. All of the characters are so sweetly flawed, and thus, so real.

I can't wait to read the rest of this new series from one of my favorite authors of Amish fiction. Her books would be a great introduction to the Amish fiction genre.
