The Geeky Calvinist5 Stars Out Of 5A Expository Genius IndeedFebruary 21, 2017The Geeky CalvinistQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Expository Genius of John Calvin written by Steven J. Lawson, and published by Reformation Trust is part of the A Long Line of Godly Men profile series, for which Lawson also serves as General Editor. John Calvin is most known for his part in shaping Reformed Theology and his work The Institutes of the Christian Religion which in works written by man about Holy Scripture is without equal, yet The Expository Genius of John Calvin does not focus on his written works but on a part of Calvins life which is not examined enough.
While on the outset The Expository Genius of John Calvin might seem like just another biography of Calvins life, it is not. This work does contain a bit size biography of John Calvin but its main drive is to demonstrate to the reader the dedication and careful verse by verse expository approach Calvin took with scripture. Each chapter either deals with his preparation for preaching, his presentation of the scripture in preaching, or the in-depth breakdown of his explanation of scripture and defuel application of scripture.
While there are many books that have been written on John Calvin and be assured there will be many more, The Expository Genius of John Calvin is one of the few books about Calvins preparation and execution of the sacred duty of preaching to those in his charge. The Expository Genius of John Calvin will have a lasting effect on your understanding of a servant of God and hopefully help the reader, from the example of Calvin, and seek to exposit the scriptures with the same tenacity and depth that Calvin strived for in his ministry.
This book was provided to me free of charge from Reformation Trust Publishing in exchange for an unbiased, honest review. -

Curtis5 Stars Out Of 5June 23, 2008CurtisSteve Lawson is an excellent author, you really can't go wrong with anything that he has written. I'd recommend his books to anyone, he really captures the side of John Calvin that is easily overlooked today, the faithful preacher and pastor.

Ellen5 Stars Out Of 5March 24, 2007EllenI am humbled by this pastor who is brave enough to speak the truth of God's Word. So many in the pulpit are ashamed of the Gospel of Christ(Romans 1:16-17). He is not! It would change the man behind the pulpit by reading this and then displaying God's beautiful life and work of Jesus Christ. We encourage the reading of this book and believe it could begin a new reformation in the heart of the church today.
