I am not normally one who likes to read the sappy Christmas novel that reminds you more of a Hallmark movie than a book. But I really liked one of Ms. Carlson's previous Christmas novellas, so I decided to give this one a try.

Overall this was a nice, sweet story, but it also had some interesting aspects to it as well. There were a couple of times when I laughed out loud over something a character said or did. That always makes for a great story in my book. I thought it was funny that Garrison's grandmother was so particular about what should happen with her cats, but it was sweet as well.

Having the story be told from Garrison's perspective was an interesting aspect and one that really fit with the overall tone of the book. Stories of this type are not usually told from the point of view of just the main male character, and it was a nice change of pace.

Since this is a novella, there wasn't a lot of time to develop the main characters, but I actually felt as if I got to know Garrison very well. I thought his relationships developed a bit quickly and that the ending felt very rushed, but that is to be expected in this short of a story.

One thing that I thought was odd in this novella was that it was a bit unrealistic for Garrison's allergies to seemingly disappear once he got "used" to the cats. It was almost as if his allergies ended up being all in his head, and that is just not the case with true allergic reactions.

While The Christmas Cat would definitely make a good Hallmark movie, it was still an interesting story and a nice tale for the holiday season.

THE CHRISTMA CAT by Melody Carlson

I could do without the labels nailed into the first three chapters, - humor, profiling, venting? A passing remark would have sanded the characterization for me.

    But I liked the story.

Quirky, stormy, romantic and providential events fill this inspiring, charming and funny book.

If you ever wondered how one could become a magnet for strays, this book succinctly shares the secret.

Its amusing how the hero ad heroine both want the same pet- and we watch as the ageless progression of how a pet chooses and acquires a human.

A good exercise on how to place a pet with a suitable human, this book is pet advocate front to back, with romantic overtures providing something the cats didnt orchestrate, but, perhaps Divine Intervention did.

Set to climax at the Christmas Season with upbeat closure and dreams coming true now finishes.

Sometimes I think that the Christmas season would be incomplete without a sweet novella by Melody Carlson - and she does this so well!

"Garrison Brown had been known to cross the street in order to avoid contact with a common house cat."

These opening words hint at quirky characters, humor, and a path that definitely won't run smoothly. The Christmas Cat is a light, charming, feel-good type of story and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Garrison, having served for nine years with a humanitarian organization in Uganda, is at a crossroads in his life when the responsibility of finding homes for his deceased grandmother's six cats is thrust upon him. I grew to like Garrison because of his commitment to carrying out her wishes and enjoyed the way one special Maine Coon kitty named Harry slowly broke down his defenses. It was delightful to see the way each cat's distinctive personality was brought out.

Some romance is present, but it isn't the story's strong suit. The neighbors that Garrison meets are endearing - especially Ruby, his grandmother's neighbor and best friend, and Vincent. I loved seeing how cats could affect so many "needy" people in a positive way - people who needed the affection and companionship of a feline in their lives. There's not much spiritual depth, but one theme that stood out to me was that rather than giving up on your dreams, give God time to work.

I'm a cat lover, so I obviously loved this story - but I believe it is one that any pet lover would enjoy. Recommended.

I recently read The Christmas Cat by Melody Carlson for review. The story is about young Garrison Brown and his unlikely task of finding homes for his grandmother's six cats after she passes away. The will is unconventional and there is strict criteria for each adoptive cat owner.

    The Christmas Cat

While he is looking for new homes for the cats, Garrison stays at his Gram's home. He is severely allergic to cats and must wear a mask and keep his bedroom barricaded in order to be comfortable. The home has many memories for Garrison since he came to live with his grandmother after his parents died. It was only after Garrison left for college that she got her first cat to fill the void he left in the house.

The story is heartwarming as we meet the people who are connected by these cats. From Ruby, the widow next door to the young and pretty Cara each has their own story as they touch Garrison and help him find his true calling.

This is a nice story for an afternoon by the fire with a cup of cocoa and a cat at your feet!

"The Christmas Cat" by Melody Carlson was the first Christmas book that I read this year. It's a very short read, but true to Carlson's style, packed with several great plots! I've received a lot of teasing for reading this book...I am not an animal person, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it!

I've been reading Carlson since I was ten or eleven years old. If her name is on the cover I'm going to give it a try for sure. We all have our favorite authors and she has been one of mine for years.

Let's talk about her latest release and then I'll tell you about my Gingerbread Hot Cocoa recipe...

"The Christmas Cat" is mostly set in present day Vancouver, WA and begins just before Thanksgiving. A man named Garrison is the main character and he begins the book with a few things to sort out. After being a missionary in Africa, he returns to the states and finds himself single, living with a buddy, and without a job. To complicate matters even more, he ends up losing his Grandmother and becoming the executor of her estate which includes six cats who are going to need homes.

Garrison's dilemma unfolds in Vancouver with a fair amount of humor, a smidgen of romance, and some good lessons that we can all relate to along the way.

You'll become pretty fond of Ruby (the sweet older neighbor lady) and I hate to admit it, but even the cats themselves!

Sometimes you just need to read a good story and "The Christmas Cat" is exactly that. It's not one that will make you cry. The humor won't have you rolling your eyes. It really is the perfect book to enjoy with a hot drink on a cold winter day!

Grab a copy of "The Christmas Cat" today and be sure to tell me what you think!
