THE CALLING is a beautifully written story. It is the second book in The Inn of Eagle Hill series. Readers will want to read The Letters first, as the books really don't stand alone. In fact, they may want to read The Stoney Ridge series first, as it's a continuation.

I enjoyed getting to know Bethany better, as well as her little sister, Mim, and the neighbor girl, Naomi. It was fun discovering some of the secrets the four elderly spinster sisters were harboring. The book started out kind of exciting with Bethany making a grizzly discovery. For awhile I wondered if this would turn out to be murder mystery. But that was solved quickly. If you are looking for a good Amish book to read, pick up THE CALLING or any of Ms. Fisher's other Amish books. An excerpt from the next book in the series is included at the end of the book as well as some delicious sounding recipes.

Sometimes when you read such a great story about a fictional place, you find yourself wishing that the places, people and settings are real so you could visit. Much is the same for the Inn at Eagle Hill. Suzanne Woods Fisher created just the place in her series, The Inn at Eagle Hill. It's a B & B located on the Amish farm of Rose Schrock and she is trying to find a way to earn a living after the recent death of her husband which also left her under scrutiny of the SEC for Schrock Investments. A company that was owned and ran by her former husband and his business partner Jake Hertzler. Only Jake has disappeared along with her son Tobe and now they are being investigated. Only Rose doesn't know where either of them have run off to, and she is doing everything she can to keep going in spite of all the debt that Schrock Investments now has to pay for their investors.

Bethany is trying hard to forget Jake and the idea that she ever saw anything in him to begin with. Now they they had broken up and Jake has left town, she is trying to find someone to keep her thoughts off of her past and focused on her future. It seems that she can't seem to make any good decisions lately. In fact even though she is tempted by Jimmy Fisher, her neighbor, who is more than interested in her, Bethany feels that she is just one of many girls that Jimmy is interested in. And based on her most recent relationship with Jake, she doesn't believe she is meant to be with anyone at all right now.

While she spends her time trying to help her mother with the guests that are staying at their Inn, she also has a part time job assisting a group of five Amish sisters who are in desperate need of organizing their home. They are what you would call Amish horders and since the Amish are supposed to rotate house for Sunday services, the Bishop has told the Sisters that they have to host as soon as they can get their home ready. That is the reason they have hired Bethany. She isn't attached to anything the Sisters want to hold on to and she could use the money to help her mother. Everything is going along fine until Bethany finds a chest of bones located in the basement and believes the Sisters are murderers. Will she ever be able to go back?

In the novel The Calling, the second book in the Inn at Eagle Hill series from Suzanne Woods Fisher, we are once more taken back into further detail with the Schrock family. In the first novel The Letters, we got an inside look into Rose's life and the establishment of the Inn. Now in The Calling, her daughter Bethany is the focus and we get a chance to see how her past relationship with Jake is complicating matters with helping her family dealing with the investments issues with the SEC. While the novel focuses on the lives of Bethany and Jimmy, we are also introduced to Naomi King, Galen's sister who is married to Rose. Naomi has had a crush on Tobe Schrock since she was a child and now that he has come home to face the music of his dealings with Schrock Investments and Jake Hertzler, Naomi finds her crush has turned into true love. But what will happen when Tobe meets with the SEC investigator. It may mean a life altering choice for Bethany and Naomi.

I received The Calling by Suzanne Woods Fisher compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Revell Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. I can't wait to see how this all plays out and I will have to wait until The Revealing is released to know. However I loved so many of the Amish proverbs that are woven through this story that my poor novel has been ear marked to death. Couple that with an amazing recipe for Rose's Blueberry Buckle that is already calling my name and a Book Discussion Guide that is perfect for book clubs you have it all in one amazing novel. This one is well worth all 5 out of 5 stars!

Bethany is working to clean out the house of the five sisters home so they can host church. She thought the group of sisters where just old and liked to collects things but she soon finds out there is more to them then that. She is also still getting over the man she had seen, has up and disappeared and likely helped to ruin her father's business. Jimmy is someone she thought was immature and not worth her notice but as she gets to know him she finds herself attracted to him. While she is working to clean out the sisters home she learns they run a soup kitchen once a month and as she and more and more of her community help out each week they find themselves learning to see their neighbors in a new light.

This is book two in the series. I have not read the first book yet this book can be read as a stand alone though you will have a better idea who people are if you read the first one as this is a continuing story. The author does a decent job bring the readers up to speed from the first book.

What I liked: The author is well-known for her deeper plots and this book and series is no exception. The family is dealing with the backlash of a failed business. The father is dead and the brother has run off. There are a few characters telling this story. I like the complexity and how well the story comes together as the book progresses. I found all the characters quite likable.

What I did not like: This book is good but the plot was a little slow at times. Fishers books always have a lot going on in them and it can take a little time to get all the subplots figured out and with a few characters telling the story I don't always feel like I get to know the main characters as well as I would like.

Overall this was a good book and I am looking forward to the third book in the series to see how it all plays out. Towards the end I found myself more interested in the next book than how this book was going to finish up. If you're looking for a light quick read this book is not for you but if you like books with a strong story and some twists and turns than this is a good series for you. I would highly recommend going back and reading the first book though. You don't have to but it's the back story and I wonder had I read it first maybe this book would have been more enjoyable to me.

The Calling by Suzanne Woods Fisher is another great book by Suzanne Woods Fisher. It is the second book in The Inn at Eagle Hill series. It is clean, all round good read.

As you all know, I am intrigued by the Amish and appreciate their deep sense of community and commitment to one another and this story exemplifies this in a very real and strong way. I cannot tell you how or I'd reveal part of the mystery of the book.

I really enjoyed getting to know Bethany's character better. I loved how she played hard to get with her "friend" Jimmy. :) She also displayed wisdom and how she learned from her past mistakes.

The mystery and twists and turns surrounding Bethany's mother kept me guessing and wondering. I also cried buckets over the revelation of that whole story line.

Another part of the Amish community I enjoy is the respect the younger have for the elderly. In this series, there is a group of five spinster sisters who stand out for their service and commitment to the community, but they also stand out for the way in which they care and interact with the younger generation. The younger in turn cares and respects them. It seems more rare than common in our society today.

If you haven't guessed already, The Calling gets two thumbs up from me!

Faith and Family Reviews received the book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

It took me a little bit to get back in this story, but as I continued I was happy to be reunited with some dear friends. We are reunited with the Schrock family, among others. There is still the romance of Rose and Galen, but they are not primary this time.

We find with Bethany that some bad decisions, keep coming back to haunt her. Will she ever be free of Jake Hertzler? Some of the things that happen made me gasp...."No". We find that Jimmy Fisher is still working for Galen, but his mother wants him to take over the chicken business. Can he give up his dream of being a horse trainer. Does he have a chance with Bethany, she has sworn off men.

Then there is sweet Mem, she is still trying to be Mrs Miracle. How will that work out? These and more questions are answered in this book, but we are really left with a lot of unanswered. I can't wait for the next book, I want to know what happens.

I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
