Publisher's Description

A terrible darkness has fallen upon Jacob Weisz’s beloved Germany. The Nazi regime, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, has surged to power and now hold Germany by the throat. All non-Aryans—especially Jews like Jacob and his family—are treated like dogs.

When tragedy strikes during one terrible night of violence, Jacob flees and joins rebel forces working to undermine the regime. But after a raid goes horribly wrong, Jacob finds himself in a living nightmare—trapped in a crowded, stinking car on the train to the Auschwitz death camp.

As World War II rages and Hitler begins implementing his “final solution” to systematically and ruthlessly exterminate the Jewish people, Jacob must rely on his wits and a God he’s not sure he believes in to somehow escape from Auschwitz and alert the world to the Nazi’s atrocities before Fascism overtakes all of Europe. The fate of millions hangs in the balance.

I remember learning about WWII and the Concentration Camps in high school but this book brought it all to life. The characters in the book captured my attention on page one and it was hard to put down. Jacob has lost his entire family because they were Jews and is now in the most horrific of camps, Auschwitz. The only thing left is to escape or die.

Young German Jacob Weisz watches the new Nazi regime's power grow under Adolf Hitler. All non-Aryans, but most especially Jews, are treated like animals. Jacob's uncle leads him to work for the Resistance. One night during a raid gone bad, Jacob is captured and finds himself in a train on the way to Auschwitz. Resistance fighters within Auschwitz learn they can trust him, and he helps others escape with one main objective - to inform the rest of the world what the Nazis are doing through the death camps. Jacob waits for his turn to escape.

This is the first book by Joel Rosenberg I had read, but it won't be the last. The story had my attention from the first. It was easy to follow, even with numerous characters and locations. I've read many books and watched many movies (as a non-expert...) about the Holocaust and found this very informative about successful escapes I didn't realize had occurred. We must never forget what happened.

This was a good book. It was a detailed and accurate picture of what life was like under Hitler's reign.

The Auschwitz Escape is my favorite book so far in my summer reading adventure. I say this with the caveat that probably my favorite genre of literature is historical fiction, of which this book is a part. I learned many things about the experience of the Nazi "death camps" that I didn't know before, most importantly, that there actually were some successful escapes. When you read of the great lengths the Nazis took to keep people in, to keep those on the outside from knowing what was really going on, it truly is remarkable that some managed to get out. Even more surprising was how hard it seemed to get those outside to believe what was really going on inside. I imagine from the perspective of the day, it does seem unbelievable that this could possibly be happening.

I really appreciated the "Author's Note" in the back that listed many facts (and the places that he strayed ever-so-slightly) of the true story, along with a list of sources he consulted when writing his novel. I have already put a couple of those books on my library list for later. It is important, especially in today's world with so many little "internal" wars that seem to seek to provide ethnic cleansing, that we continue to remember things like Auschwitz and what the world's failure to realize what was happening allowed. As Santayana wrote (in The Life of Reason, 1905): "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Warning...once you start this book you will NOT want to put it down. I have been interested in WWII and the Holocaust for a long time, and have read many books about it. This novel is based on real events (the escape) and the author grabs you from the first page. While the story is about the Holocaust and the death camps, it is also a story of brave men and women who tried to do what their faith tells them to do and also a love story. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a great story that is based on fact.
