Jen5 Stars Out Of 5May 29, 2009JenI found myself not being able to put this book down. I read it within like 3 days. I loved how I was taken back into the 1800's. Being in Pharmacy school this book caught my eye in the bookstore. I learned so much about what an apothecary shop was like back in the old days. There were so many suprises at the end. I went out today and bought Klassen's other book. I would highly recommend this book.

myrtiaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5May 14, 2009myrtiaGender: femalecouldn't stop reading this book. it was so rich and delightful in every aspect. the plot was so realistic, so beautifully developed and so terribly unpredictable! there are mysteries of the past and hardships of the present and decisions to be reached sooner or later. the christian theme is powerfully, although subtly introduced in the most critical, most human moments of the plot. it also contains a lot of information on the era, which is very pleasantly and easily read along with the story. what touched me deeply (except for the romance, of course) was that every time a miracle was needed (which was quite often) God certainly provided one, every time, although a different one than axpected. i also loved the characters, the good along with the bad, the weak along with the righteous, because i felt like i really got to know them. i loved the author's first book, and although i thought it would be very difficult for her to surpass it, i have to say this may be even better.

Ginny5 Stars Out Of 5January 26, 2009GinnyThe daughter of an apothecary in a small English village must assist her father and slow-minded brother after her mother runs off. Readers get to experience village life, London society, snobbery, kindness and the intriguing developing medical profession as though we walked those streets ourselves. An unexpectedly captivating story that drew me into Elizabethan England. I say 'unexpected' because I don't typically read historical fiction. But Julie Klassen's writing style is rich and full of period detail that supports the story instead of distracting from it. It reads like she's been influenced by a love of Jane Austin, and has successfully created characters that I think are more romantic, more real, and more relatable. The spiritual content is subtle and seamless to the plot, and most importantly, doesn't beat the reader over the head to make a point. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well-written and realistic historical romance.

Susan Snodgrass5 Stars Out Of 5January 13, 2009Susan SnodgrassAnother masterpiece from Julie Klassen. Her last book, 'The Lady of Milkweek Manor' was outstanding and I do believe this one has surpassed it. She gives minute attention to historical detail in her books, which is something I truly enjoy. She develops her characters so much that you feel you actually know them. Her books seem very deep, not just a story to the reader.Lilly goes through so many different emotions n this book and has to make many hard choices, but she eventually makes the right ones for her life. If you've never read one of Julie Klassen's books, please don't hesitate to do so. You will not be disappointed, I assure you.
