Author Bio

Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil.  At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist.  And so did everyone else--he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach.  He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.

Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics.  He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.

In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook's classic Picture Bible.  What David C. Cook couldn't know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible.  He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!

I cannot express how grateful I am for having found this amazing graphic Bible. My son first was given one at the boys group at our church. After seeing his interest and knowledge grow we started buying them as gifts for others.

I told a Christian colleague at the public school that I work at about The Action Bible and she asked me to get her one for her classroom library. "You can do that?" I asked her. I ended up putting one in my class library too.

The following year my class copy was being fought over at reading time. I told a couple friends about my "problem" and they bought 5 more copies from CBD for my classroom. The kids cheered when I brought them into class.

I used them to teach about Jesus' birth, death and resurrection ( we get to cover many different cultures, traditions and celebrations in our grade 2 curriculum, including Christian holidays).

At the end of the year I called all of my students' parents and asked if I could give them each an Action Bible.

I gave 19 bibles away last year in the last week of school. Many to children who have never been or will ever go to church.

These Action Bibles will continue being a blessing for years to come.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Sergio Cariello
Located in: Holiday, Florida
Submitted: March 25, 2010

Tell us a little about yourself.   I was born in Brazil. At the age of 5 I already knew I wanted to draw comics. At 11 I had my first comic strip published in Local newspapers-Frederico, the Detective. At Caliber Press I penciled, inked and lettered the HP Lovecraft's Dagon, with writer Steven Jones. At Marvel I drew Daredevil,Conan,Thor, Captain America, Disney's Quasimodo,Spider-man, the Avengers and others.Drew Batman, Superman, New Gods, Young Heroes in Love, Superboy, Steel, Guy Gardner, Hawkman, Man called X, The Flash, Deathstroke,Wonderwoman, Green Arrow, Azrael and others for DC.Taught 7 yrs at the Joe Kubert School.Member of the National Cartoonists Society since 1995.Worked with Chuck Dixon and Beau Smith in the Wildcat mini-series.Dark Horse(Beau's and mine Badlander), Image(Spawn),Sojourn, Lady Death, Scion, Crux, and other Crossgen titles,Iron Ghost with Chuck and ATP) and many others. Currently working on the Lone Ranger(Dynamic Forces), Son of Samson with writer Gary Martin for Zondervan/ Harper Collins, and other gigs here and there.

What was your motivation behind this project?  To do a Life changing, Eternal value, relevant project the way I love to do: Comic Book format. When they called me, offering me to do it, I could not contain my excitement to revamp the Classic Picture Bible I read when I was a kid. This has probably been the most significant project of my life. I wish I was given more time to accomplish it but I had to do it in 3 years.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Get entertainment and get inspired, hopefully get touched inwardly, reconnecting with the Artist of artists: Jesus Christ , who is present not only in the New Testament but in the Old testament as well. So I hope they gain life, full, never ending life.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I know the main Character, Jewish carpenter of this story of Love and redemption. Many times, while drawing the pages I found myself in need of applying the life teaching principals within this Divine inspired script in my own private world. One of the colorists got a personal life encounter with the messiah of the story. The subject matter taps into our soul in ways that can be revolutionary for our betterment .

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  From comics, strips and graphic novels: Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, Joe Kubert's Tarzan, John Buscema's Conan , Frank Frazetta's books , Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon and many others . In the movies side: Mel Gibson's "The Passion" and Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" .

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  They can learn more about me and my work in my blog, my website,or even chat with me in Facebook or twitter by just searching for me in the internet.
