According to the World Health Organization, approximately one million people die by suicide annually. They are convinced that death will rescue and relieve them from suffering the heavy burden of overwhelming pain. They are people without hope.

In "Suicide Prevention: Hope When Life Seems Hopeless," Author June Hunt says, "God created everyone with an inner need to feel significant, yet the desire to live slowly burns out within a heart that no longer sees a reason to live. As the candle of hope is extinguished, that inner sense of purpose is snuffed out by overwhelming despair."

In this 96-page booklet, Hunt speaks to the power of haunting trauma, mocking shame, suffocating secrecy, engulfing agony, a victimizer's power, crushing emotional burdens, tormenting self-hatred, and the catalysts that push sufferers over the edge.

She writes, "Those struggling with life-threatening thoughts do not feel connected to others. They feel all alone--even alone in the midst of a crowd." What we need to know about people obsessed with or considering suicide is this: People don't want to die--what they really want is for their pain to end. They also need to know they are not alone. People want a reason to hope. But they need something more powerful than themselves to lead them out of the darkness that deceives them into thinking and believing that death is the answer, and into the light. This mini-book is part of Hunt's "Hope For The Heart" series that speaks to a variety of issues that keep people from living their life to the fullest, (from a biblical point of view).

The author outlines three stages for observers to be aware of in the case of potential suicide (associated thinking/behaviors/attitudes); characteristics of suicidal teens; and various questions you can ask a suicidal spouse, child, or friend. Readers will also learn definitions, characteristics, causes, and most importantly, steps to solutions. The booklet offers a run-through of personal spiritual history, medical history, thought patterns, and family suicidal history that can be used as an assessment aid; plus a practical checklist with examples of ways to alleviate suicidal obsession. She also includes a section on "bully-cide".

This booklet provides a quick overview on suicide and prevention along with both practical and spiritual helps. The author also points out the wisdom in sharing with a trusted friend, advisor, medical and/or mental health professional.

In reestablishing hope for the heart, the author leads readers back to God's desire: to restore lives through his love, to give comfort, and compassion. He wants to make broken lives and shattered hearts whole again--to alleviate pain, heal hearts, and restore hope.

Note: Rose Publishing provided me with an advanced reader copy of this booklet.

I have reviewed many pamphlets written by June Hunt. They are Christ-centered and useful information for a variety of personal and family issues. Through my volunteer Christian ministries, it is imperative to recognize the early stage of Suicide. June Hunt has clearly listed three stages. The Downcast or Early Stage; the Distressed or Advanced Stage; and lastly the Despairing or Danger Stage. As a retired teacher and grandparent, I cannot stress enough the parents and teachers need to be aware of all of these stages. Each time I hear of another teenage suicide, I wonder where we are missing the mark with our children. I believe we can make a difference in the lives of our friends and family if we intervene early enough. Repeated conflicts in the home and difficulties at school can signal a need for discussion. Just having the listening ear of someone with a compassionate heart can make a difference in the life of a downcast and depressed person.

I like the many scripture verses that the author used in this short but valuable resource. Many of these are my "go-to" verses in my communication with depressed and hurting women. Over half of the women who I minister to through online evangelism listed struggles with depression. Depression is listed in the Distressed Stage. I highly recommend this pamphlet as one way to educate others about recognizing stages in Suicide Prevention. I was given this PDF for a fair and honest review by Hendrickson Publishing and Rose Publication.

Have purchased 65 of these. Passing out to local pastors and the Youth leaders of the church. They have been very well received. It is unfortunate that there is a need for this resource. I believe that there is real benefit in putting this in the hands of pastors and youth leaders.
