This is our first year using Spelling Power...so far, we really like it. The record books are well worth the couple bucks. Yes, you could legally make copies/printouts with this program, or just use loose leaf paper, but these books keep all the tests in one place for easy grade-keeping and year-end review. My only disappointment is that these don't have quite enough pages for a year...perhaps b/c we tend to do Spelling 5 days a week, though. We especially love the backs of the pages, where the students practice any words they've misspelled by going through a 10-step study method.

Having two boys that are 17 mos. apart in age, we do the most of their curriculum at the same level. Spelling became a challenge b/c the younger seems to be a natural at it, while the older struggles. Recently, we tried Sequential Spelling, which I like, but it didn't seem as if it offered enough. So a friend suggested Spelling Power. The cost of the program seemed high. Yes, it goes through high school, but what if it was like the others, and didn't quite fit our family? I decided to try it. Afterall, it was costly enough to switch from one program to another.Well, I absolutely LOVE Spelling Power! The Student Books aren't necessary, but my children like checking things off; so we really like them. The program allows my younger child to move on when he already knows the words- vs. "sitting" on words they already know for a week in common spelling programs. As for my older son, it provides every aspect of learning in order for him to retain the spelling. The program only takes us about ten minutes, per child, a day, and there is such a great review process built into the program that they WILL learn the words. The manual has suggested activities, and/or you can purchase the Activity Task Cards. If you are on a limited budget, the manual is enough. The activity cards do provide independent work for supplemental practice though. I HIGHLY recommend this program!

We began using spelling power last year. I did not initially order the record books. However, after using them for a year, I can definitely say it is worth the expense. It keeps my kids on track, and I don't have to make a bunch of copies. It is a must (in my opinion, with my kids) for us to use the record books with this program.

and I didn't buy these books right off, but it is easier and not really much more expensive than printing my own.
