Product Description

Anxiety. Depression. Fear. Loneliness. These are all symptoms of a soul that has lost touch with its source of life. Like a flower snipped from the vine, the soul that is not turned toward God can only wither away.

In Soul Keeping, bestselling author John Ortberg sheds light on the most overlooked, underrated, and least-understood part of your being. With a workable and relevant approach, he shows how living the "with God" life isn't just a good idea--it's the only way to find lasting peace and satisfaction. Hardcover.

Publisher's Description

When is the last time you thought about the state of your soul?

The health of your soul isn’t just a matter of saved or unsaved. It’s the hinge on which the rest of your life hangs. It’s the difference between deep, satisfied spirituality and a restless, dispassionate faith.

In an age of materialism and consumerism that tries to buy its way to happiness, many souls are starved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false promises of status and wealth. We’ve neglected this eternal part of ourselves, focusing instead on the temporal concerns of the world—and not without consequence.

Bestselling author John Ortberg presents another classic that will help you discover your soul—the most important connection to God there is—and find your way out of the spiritual shallow-lands to true divine depth. With characteristic insight and an accessible story-filled approach, Ortberg brings practicality and relevance to one of Christianity’s most mysterious and neglected topics.

This book came at a right time for me as restlessness stirred in my soul that I just could not pinpoint. That said, this is a bit of a heavy read if you really want to take something out of it. I found it best (as I read it twice) to approach it like a personal Bible study and give myself time to explore, digest, and apply what I read.

In Soul Keeping, John Ortberg explores the enigma that is the human soul and how we should care for the innermost part of our beings. Ortberg describes the should as the thing that "integrates your will (your intentions), your mind (your thoughts and feelings, your values and conscience), and your body (your face, body language, and actions) into a single life". He explores how our souls long to connect, mainly with God and different things in our lives that drain our soul of its health. Ortberg draws heavily upon conversations and wisdom from his friend and mentor Dallas Willard.

The book resonated with me because there have been times I've literally felt like my soul was dying. Ortberg's book provided good insight on how to address soul issues from the inside, how to distinguish between what is causing your soul's unrest, and ways to simplify and declutter your mind in order to seek peace. This is a heavy read as far as substance, content, and application, but not necessarily readability. Ortberg's style is approachable and relatable.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to post a positive review.

Wow! I can't wait to read this book again and glean more nuggets for my hungry soul. I love how Ortberg talks in a language I can understand but at the same time feeds me so deeply! So much to grow on! Thank you John, for your honesty about your own struggles and hunger. I could relate to so many of the vignettes of struggling Christians. Just in time for my Christmas gifts!

We did this in my small group. It was interesting in week 1, we opened by asking everyone to define what their soul is and what does it do? It became obvious, everyone felt they had one, however describing it and it's role was something many had not given a lot of thought to. We ended week 6 asking the same question, and their responses were encouraging. Now they know it is their responsibility to nurture a healthy soul and how to do it. John Ortberg and his friendship with Dallas Willard is nothing less than inspiring! The video content is clear and easy to follow. I heartily recommend this for small group study....

I just finished reading "Soul Keeping," and I loved it. I can't wait to go through it with the small group. The author describes the problem with our souls, he shares how the soul overlays and interacts with all of our being, and then he provides practical solutions on how to keep the soul healthy, based on what the soul needs. This is a great tool for those who have never considered the state of their souls or why they should think about their souls after praying the sinner's prayer. It's also helpful for those who want to care for their souls but need some reminders on how to do that. I appreciated the poignant story of Dallas Willard's life and death, and how he embodied the author's view of a life well-lived.
