Woah... This book is an absolute thriller! I seriously could not put it down. Dani has honestly lifted this already fantastic series to even greater heights with Silenced. The story and the characters are completely captivating. Kayden's struggle with her fears is so easy to relate to. Most of us have been there or know what it's like to be afraid. I really admired Kayden's inner strength and the way she developed in the book. And Jake, honestly what can I say? He is truly one of the most remarkable male characters I have ever come across in a book. He has been knocked down many times, yet he does not give up. You can't help but be full of admiration for him and how the hard times have shaped him into an even better man - a true hero. Silenced is such an uplifting book that truly inspires you and has you cheering the characters on. Add in an evil villain who is determined to have revenge and fingernail-biting suspense and you are all set for another thrilling adventure with the McKenna clan. Can't wait to find out Reef and Kirra's story in the next exciting instalment!

Dani Pettrey's fourth installment in the Alaskan Courage Series is out and she hasn't missed a beat yet!

Silenced was an exciting read filled with an amazing cast of characters. Most of them are all familiar to readers who have been following the series all along. I read this book from that perspective, having started with Dani and the McKenna clan in book #1 Submerged. I am not a good person to ask how the story holds its own to a reader just joining the fun. However, each of the past characters plays a supporting role in the book, continuing on with their story lines slightly. This makes the characters more fleshed out then just names and casual mentions.

I have been looking forward to this story line since the middle of book #3 Stranded. Kayden always drew my curiosity in the ways she poked and prodded at Jake, hoping to prove him a fraud. In book #3 we all got a glimpse into his secretive past making us all, Kayden included, like him a little bit more.

Now in Silenced we have the full growth of that change into a budding romance. And a sweet one at that. Jake is anything but a fraud. He is a gentle man filled with protectiveness, spirit and faith. He fights hard to protect the woman he's falling for and the family that supports her. A wonderful hero.

It was also fun to peel back some of the hardened outer layers of Kayden and see into her heart. She is a strong woman with her own demons and secrets to secure. Yet, with faith, time and the gentle prodding of a compassionate, caring man she learns to reveal her true self.

The suspenseful plot was responsible for a few late nights, but thankfully I was compelled to finish it in only a few days! Pettrey has a gift for keeping the reader moving along. Her twists and turns are engaging and believable. This book is tops in that category. I can't even tell you why, or I might spoil the ride for you. Loved the twist!!

Again, Pettrey sets the stage for another round. The book adds in a couple new points of view later in the book as bad-boy brother Reef gets a voice along with newcomer Kirra. At first this threw me off. I found it distracting to the story line my heart was invested in. It became clear as the story went along that this was the pre-staging for the next book Sabotaged. However, it was a bit jolting so late in the story. Even still, I am looking forward to see what trouble those two characters will get in to. (Release February 2015.)

Overall, a fantastic addition to your summer reading list! Excitement, romance, enthralling settings and deep, engaging characters - a perfect mix!

Thanks to Bethany House, and the author for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. These thoughts are my own and I was not required to review it positively.

This is a romance that I have looked forward to happening and it's interlaced with adrenaline pumping suspense.

We go back to Yancey, Alaska and the McKenna family. This is Kayden's story. She is one of the co-owners of Last Frontier Adventures and works as a pilot in the family business. She is the oldest sister and probably the most affected by her mother's death. One of her greatest fears is getting rheumatoid arthritis like her mother. As a result she has become a health nut, runs 10 miles everyday and eats only organic food. Kayden also doesn't trust easily and loves free climbing.

Jake Westin Cavanaugh is the kind of man you can't help but notice when he walks into the room. He's quiet, but his boy language exudes confidence. Yet when you look into his eyes it's evident that there's a sadness that goes to his very soul. He's known grief in his life, but doesn't like to talk about his past. Currently he's employed as a guide with Last Frontier Adventures.

Jake and Kayden are strong characters with lots of sparks igniting between them. On a day unlike any other Kayden heads out to do some mountain climbing and is accompanied by her sister, Piper, and Jake. Kayden being the most experienced takes the most difficult trail which unfortunately leads her to encounter a gruesome discovery of another climber who has perished. She immediately deduces that this is not a random death from a fall, but what appears to be a murder. Once the scene is secured and the sheriff arrives the investigation begins. With Jake's past history of being in law enforcement the sheriff asks for his assistance into checking out some leads and of course with Kayden's knowledge of climbing she is asked to assist also.

The first place they need to check out is Imnek where he lived and Rocktrex, the gym the victim practices his climbing. The climbers community is a close knit one and instantly they meet resistance to their questions. The other climbers can not believe that Kayden would actually think one of them could be involved in this death. When strange things start happening to Kayden it is attributed to retaliation for the questions being asked at Rocktrex, but Jake is not so sure. He is still haunted by the last case he worked on in Boston which cost him both is his wife and unborn child. Jake had sworn to not let himself get close to anyone again so they would not be put in danger by his job, but Kayden got thru his defenses. As factors come to light it appears the killer is on to them, but can they catch the killer before Kayden's life is put in danger?

I absolutely loved it. This is a wonderful book. I love the characters of Jake and Kayden, but have strong personalities, but can still show their vulnerabilities to one another. This is a wonderful romance, but I like the fact that the characters must work for it to happen. Both have strong moral convictions and try to live by them. The masterful use of imagery immediately draws the reader into the story. The plot flows effortlessly. I liked revisiting with characters from previous books and seeing how their lives have progressed. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance or adventure. I received this book from the author for an unbiased review which is seen above.

Book four of Dani Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series follows Kayden, the most reserved of the five McKenna siblings, and Jake Westin, the man everyone else treated like family but she never could bring herself to trust. Though Kayden now respects Jake, even is attracted to him, her fears of vulnerability hold her back. While racing her sister up a wicked cliff on a climbing trip, Kayden comes face to face with a mangled corpse. As a local climbing expert, she gets paired with the deputized Jake to investigate the death, which looks like no average climbing accident. While they fly around investigating the case, they become targets of someone's obvious displeasure. Who and why is the person so fixated on Kayden and Jake? Could there be a far more personal reason for the threats than just the investigation?

Note: It is by far best to read this series in order, since the characters and relationships are introduced and firmly established throughout the books; to just read one in the middle would mean losing out on detail and good character development.

Part of the appeal of Pettrey's novels is the setting: the rugged Alaskan landscape, with so much varied terrain, provides not only a unique and breathtaking backdrop, but also a remote location where the wicked can hatch their evil plans. Intimate knowledge of the terrain helps both the villain and the McKennas, and it adds a wild element of danger.

Sometimes a good villain is a danger to stealing the show from the heroes of the story, and Pettrey has created one diabolical villain: calculating, taunting, extremely intelligent, and unmercifully vengeful - the kind that is always one step ahead. When we finally realize what this person is capable of, the tone quickly switches from a fairly basic mystery to intense suspense. I really appreciate a villain who thinks things through and provides a challenge, planning against all contingencies - who does not hesitate to keep the victim subdued lest they escape and ruin the evil scheme. There are no dumb mistakes for this one! Marvelous villain!

For someone so strong and seemingly fearless, Kayden has a lot of fear holding her back - from eating anything remotely unhealthy, from forming relationships, and especially from being vulnerable. Just because some people always seem fine and strong, does not mean they do not hurt or fear or need any less support or love than those who are "weaker". I enjoyed watching Kayden's transformation - as she begins making progress in one area, God starts opening the doors for progress in other areas too. I doubt she will ever be bubbly and effervescent like her sister Piper, but we can see the thawing around that part of her that froze when her mother died.

Pettrey has become one of the greatest suspense writers on the market, not only with on-the-edge-of-your-seat, gripping plots and romance, but also with the touches that make it real - detailed setting, family relationships, and God at work in people's lives. I highly recommend this novel - 5 out 5 stars!

Thank you Bethany House for a free copy of the novel for the purpose of review; I was not required to make it positive, and all opinions are my own.

Pettrey adds another exciting link to the Alaskan Courage Series with Silenced! After Kayden McKenna discovers a dead body on a cliff during a climbing expedition, Sheriff Landon Grainger enlists former detective and family friend, Jake Westin, to help solve the mystery of the climber's untimely death. As Kayden lends her climbing expertise to Jake's case, the two begin spending quite a bit of time together- alone. Pettrey expertly presents both the attraction and tension between Jake and Kayden. Jake's feelings for Kayden were first hinted at in Submerged but have steadily risen to the surface in the next two books in the series. In this novel, he can't hide how deeply he cares for her as his protective nature of her continually surfaces as they hunt for the climber's killer. Kayden, on the other hand, has appeared hostile toward Jake since the first book, but Silenced reveals that her harsh outward dealings with him in previous novels simply masked her own deep feelings for him. As the two grow more intimate, they also get closer to finding the climber's murderer and are relieved when the case is solved. However, in an exciting twist, the reader finds that there are actually two mysteries intertwining throughout the plot! And the second one adds multiple layers of danger and excitement to the already adventure-laden story!

I have enjoyed all three of the previous novels in this series, but Silenced is by far my favorite! I adore Jake's fierce protection of Kayden as he quietly keeps his feelings for her hidden beneath the surface. This aspect of their story is so endearing to me because it is the very fierceness of his protection that so transparently displays to the world his very deep love for her! It used to bother me in past novels when Kayden was downright hateful to Jake, but Pettrey reveals the source of Kayden's actions as a carefully constructed veil for her own feelings toward Jake and the health fears she faces. Loved that her "tough-girl" exterior was softened and that she let glimpses of her true feelings for Jake slip through the cracks. Also, the stalker mystery (which to me was the "secondary" plot to Jake and Kayden's love story) was gasp-worthy once I realized the "first" mystery wasn't the real mystery Jake and Kayden were experiencing all along. Filled with suspense, danger, adventure, and of course, romance!
