I've read a lot of parenting books but none like this one. I felt both conviction and hope. Tedd Tripp helped me to see my role as a parent in a whole new light. My children and I are so blessed to have found this book!

This has got to be the best book on parenting ever. I am sad to see the negative reviews in here that focus so much on the spanking part. If you look at the spanking part seperately from everything else he says, then you're missing the point!!Tedd Tripp even mentioned himself that you cannot just spank you're kids to 'fix' them. He says himself that it's wrong to do that. Tedd Tripp gave 8 steps for disciplining our children! Spanking is only one step, and will be useless and wrong if not administered with the other 7 steps. This book is absolutely great, and everyone should read it!

A strong willed child usually has a weak willed parent. Parenting is about flexibility. The bad reviewers get caught up in disagreeing with one or two things and then lose the whole idea of the book. This book is not about spanking it is about training your child and getting at their heart. Then when they are older instead of looking to the world for answers and guidance they look to God and the parent. Tedd Tripp is like anyone else with an opinion. You can either throw the whole book out, because you don't agree with one paragraph or recognize that there are parts you don't agree with, but the overall message of the book is powerful.

This book really helps my husband and I to have some clear guidelines in raising our four children to know the Lord and to understand themselves too. We liked the fact that the chapters on spanking are only a small part of the whole book, and appreciated the help on the "how to" of communicating side. I am surprised that so many reviews take such a negative view of the spanking chapters, when they really are only one aspect of the whole philosophy that Tedd is communicating. I think that if you don't weigh this book up for yourself and learn from it you will be missing out. It's more than worth reading.

    An Absolutely Helpful Book

This book was so very helpful to me as a new father trying to understand how to raise my kids in a Christ honoring manner. It was so helpful that I have read it twice and have referred to it many times... one of the nice aspects of the book is that it has a section (Part 2) that addresses different age classes of children. So, as my children have grown, I have been able to go to those sections and read information for their specific age (which I have done often). I read the book in 2007 and 2012. My kids are now 15 and 16.5 and are Believers.

Parenting is so hard... there are so many struggles both externally and internally. This book was an excellent guide for me but, it is certainly not the only resource you need. The only book that can help you navigate all the issues and unexpect'eds of life is the Bible (and LOTS of prayer!). But, this book really helped me get focused on what my true objective is as a parent- helping my kids align their hearts and minds with Jesus. That's what the book is about. I have read the poor reviews of this book and they ALL refer to the author's view of spanking. In fact, I scratch my head because they make it sound like the book is all about and obsessed with spanking, which it is not, not at all. He definitely lists it as a tool but, he is diligent in explaining the proper heart and approach to such a practice. Look at the Contents pages of the book and you will really see what this book is about. Its about connecting with your child on the heart level and then understanding how to move their heart toward God. The main message of his book is connect with your kids spiritually, emotionally, mentally and relationally but, you do it as their parent, not their "friend". I can't really do the book justice with my own words so, I highly recommend you read the book but, read it prayerfully and attentive to the Spirit. I have recommended the book to many folks and they have found it very helpful.
