This is the second book in the Alaskan Courage Series from Dani Pettrey.

I already loved the first book. I was completely hooked on the series, close to the end of the first book when there was a significant scene with Landon.

Therefore I was very very courious to see where Dani Pettrey would take Piper and Landon. And what can I say? Their story was just absolutely beautiful. I don't think there was too much romance or that the scenes revolving around Landon and Piper were too "showy" (for lack of a better word).

The suspense kept me on the edges of my seat and I stayed up wayyyyyy to long to finish the book. Besides I wasn't able to guess who really did it and that is always a good thing.

I liked to learn more about the other McKennas and loved to meet Reef. I hope we see more of him in the future. He and Gage are quickly becoming my favourite characters in this series.

Everything is ratcheted up in the second Alaskan Courage book — the excitement, adventure, danger, romance... I really liked the first book, Submerged, I loved Shattered, now I am really looking forward to the third book, Stranded.

This book features the youngest McKenna, Piper, and older brother Cole's best friend, Landon as the heroine and hero. Landon has been in love with Piper since that incident last summer (Submerged), Piper is just starting to think a little differently about her 'adopted big brother'. Just when things might be making a change Piper's brother is accused of murdering a friend on the ski circuit. Piper knows her brother couldn't possibly commit murder but Landon is more cautious. Piper says he should feel more with his heart but Landon knows that can get you into trouble. Will they be able to get past the wedge driven between them and also find the killer?

Piper and Landon are some of the most likable characters I have read about in awhile. Landon is a good guy just doing his job, while trying to protect Piper and nail the killer — whoever he is. Piper is a smart cookie, a little impulsive, and fiercely loyal.

I think this book appealed to me because the focus was a little more on the suspense and slightly less on the romance. But believe me, this book delivers plenty of both! I could hardly put this book down. At the end of each chapter I kept saying "Just one more chapter, just one more", and I really did mean it every time, honest! Part of the storyline seemed like it could have been taken from the headlines, it kept me glued to the pages.

One of the threads in Shattered was how God will often tug the heart using family or friends and then use circumstances to finally bring the person fully to Him. To me, it also was a reminder that our lives should be a witness but ultimately it is God that brings people to Him. None of the McKennas beat their non- Christian family and friends over the head, but they also live their beliefs in every way.

So the findings of this investigation are: GO find a copy of Shattered and start reading it NOW!

(I won this book in a giveaway and am in no way obligated to review it. I have chosen to do so and all opinions are my own)

    Shattered

Book Summary A Thrilling New Romantic Suspense from the Genre's Newest Star

Piper McKenna couldn't be more thrilled that her prodigal brother, Reef, has returned to Yancey, Alaska, after five years. But her happiness is short-lived when Reef appears at her house covered in blood. A fellow snowboarder has been killed--but despite the evidence, Reef swears he's innocent. And Piper believes him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. Piper is frustrated with his need for facts over faith, but he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth may mean risking Landon's career.

With Piper waging her own search, the two head deep into Canada's rugged backcountry--and unexpected complications. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.

Review: Part 1 - I am half way through this book. I was hooked at about the 3rd page!!! My brain is going a mile a minute to figure out the 'who and whys' of this mystery!! This is just the right amount of intensity and mystery. I also like the characters! Landon is fantastic and you just want to root for him in every way. I like Piper more and more as the story goes along, but she seems very young at times and naive about things at times yet other times she is on the mark. Reef is the perfect dupe for the murder and headstrong which makes him great. Had some difficulty with Kayden, because she can be one who doubts everyone around her and unrealistic about life in her environment (very believable because not every character is picture perfect). Really looking forward to reading Darcy's story!! Liked her immediately and the fact that they think she is some small time ski journalist is great. The background story of Gage and Meredith is great (although it may have been mentioned in the previous book which I have not read) and tantalizing when the next book comes out more answers and probable questions will keep me hooked! I agree with the fanfare I hear about Dani Pettrey this is one well written book! More to come when I finish!

The Final outcome!! The last half did not disappoint! I was on the edge of my seat with the travel, the waiting and the extra events with all the background characters. I have seldom read a book where there were so many characters that really were building blocks to the background and keep me entertained at the same time. I loved it. I really liked the 'dead ends' and other type of redirects it was fabulous. I hung on every word not wanting to miss a thing!

I would like to thank Library Thing and Bethany House Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

A wonderful combination of intrigue, danger and romance! Dani Pettrey's second novel in the Alaskan Courage series is not to be missed. Shattered continues the story of the McKenna family of Yancey, Alaska. Reef McKenna finds himself charged with murder and his sister, Piper, is determined to clear his name. Landon Grainger, family friend and deputy, is deeply in love with Piper and struggles to determine the right course of action. This story is full of action and a sweetly developed love that grows from friendship. I highly recommend Shattered and look forward to the upcoming release of the third book in the series, Stranded
