AKFOSTERMOMMYSpokane, WAAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Lots of fun things for busy hands!August 15, 2013AKFOSTERMOMMYSpokane, WAAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Besides being required for Saxon K - 3. This was recommended for younger kiddos needing something fun, while teaching older ones. I think this would work for little kids who don't throw things to the wind. The pieces are many & small. My oldest two, as toddlers, would have loved this and kept everything on a cookie sheet. My third child... I probably won't. "He's happier than a tornado in a trailer park" ~ Mater, Carrs. You know your kid!
My overall feelings on Saxon:
When I homeschooled, I used Saxon in highschool. I loved it! The instructions were simple to understand and I didn't need anyone's help/tutoring to do my work.
When I began homeschooling my own children (much younger than high school). I was told by other parents to stay away from Saxon. "Too time consuming" was the general complaint. I spent 2 years with another program that was great, but not spiral. My kids kids were excellent with current math concepts, but forgot past ones (subtraction, borrowing, regrouping, etc.). My children also didn't know how to tell time consistently, read a calendar, and struggled with months of the year & days of the week. I had hoped this would come together on it's own, but it hadn't.
After joining a co-op that promoted Saxon and talking with parents that had similar experience with other math curriculums & similar hesitations with Saxon... they reassured me it was the best decision they ever made! (Math-wise).
I tested my boys for the proper level. I was EMBARRASSED that my boys (3rd & 4th grade), who were "ahead in math", tested into K Saxon. Again, moms from my co-op reassured me. They said to start with 1st grade, because it covers Kindergarten again.
I received my Saxon 1. I LOVE IT!!!! I think the lessons will go quickly. Both my boys have gaps in understanding quantities of time (hours, days, weeks, months, etc.). Saxon has a GREAT way to teach those. Because my boys only have gaps in their math, I think most of these lessons will go quick, while others will take more time. I am grateful to find something to help with those gaps.
Because math is important to me, I want them to catch up. Saxon is set up to complete 4 lessons a week + one review day. I hope to do 5 lessons a week OR 30 minutes a day and however easy/hard a lesson is... is how far we get that day. I see some days completing 2 lessons, others 1.
This is a long review, but it took me a long time to go with Saxon. I hope I answered any similar questions/concerns you may have had. -
do it all mamanorthwestAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Very handyApril 18, 2012do it all mamanorthwestAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I found this to be very useful with my 4 and 5-yr-olds and my 7-yr-old too sometimes. I was pleasantly surprised to find it came in a clear plastic tote. I did not find the items to be overly cheap. I really like the bears and the clocks! The balance board is a little cheap but not so much that it is a problem, pretty much what I expected and it has some movable slides to make it balance properly-which sort of work. The locking blocks are really tight and can be difficult to use sometimes but I would rather they require a little more force than constantly be falling apart. These things are minor compared to how helpful everything is!

Proud mother of 5Darien, ILAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Indispensable.December 2, 2011Proud mother of 5Darien, ILAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I would very highly recommend this set for anyone teaching math to elementary school aged children. It's definitely worth every penny. It has been such an easy, convenient and fun way to help me make math come alive for my children. I haven't been homeschooling for long, but already we've experienced breakthroughs in my 7 year old's confidence and understanding of several concepts she hadn't quite grasped before in public school. It has made math time fun and engaging, and it makes life much easier for me to have these things so conveniently put together.

Mary Aycock5 Stars Out Of 5August 25, 2010Mary AycockMy kids (5, 3, 2) have really enjoyed the manipulatives. They have worked well because as I am doing the more "formal" activities with my 5 year old, there are usually enough of each (pattern blocks, linking blocks, teddy bears...) for the other two to be able to play and do simple sorting activities with. Makes math time go much easier. Delivery was fast and ordering smooth. The set was more expensive than I would have liked, but cheaper here than a couple of other places I have looked.

Becca5 Stars Out Of 5Great kitAugust 22, 2018BeccaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5We received our manipulatives kit today - I'm very impressed! I was not expecting it to arrive with its own plastic tub, but it did! We are starting Saxon Math 1 this year, and this kit seems to have everything we will need. The price was great and I'm happy with the purchase so far. My kindergartener can't wait to start school with these manipulatives!
