This has always been the official Bible for the Catholic Church that the Priests from many centuries ago were

allowed to read, yet not reccommended for the Catholic

congregations to read, So now that the church is more open about this I reccommend this version of the

Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible to my Catholic friends.

I bought one of these back in 2007, from a different vendor (i.e., not CBD). First of all, if you are expecting genuine leather, you might check with customer service to see if Baronius has gone back to genuine leather for this Bible. When I bought mine in 2007, they had switched to bonded leather, although it was still being advertised as genuine leather by the vendor. However, the Bible is still Smyth-sewn and quite well made. The text is very small (6 or 6.5 point), but still quite readable. The paper is off-white, which seems to be a factor in making it more readable. The edition I have has three Papal Encyclicals related to the Holy Scriptures (hopefully they have been retained), which I found to be of great interest, even though I am not Catholic. The re-typing and digital restoration have eliminated the "grainy" appearance that is often seen in reprints - the type and other contents are VERY clean.

This is a high quality, compact Bible. It is perfect for carrying in my purse and taking with me everywhere. The Douay Rheims translation is beautiful and not difficult to read and understand, in spite of its use of older English. The only small complaint I have about this particular volume is that the binding is coming apart at the front and back. Also, I would prefer a softer leather cover rather than the stiff cover that it has. But overall I think Baronius Press has done a good job in producing this edition. They have included three papal encyclicals on Holy Scripture (Providentissimus Deus, Spiritus Paraclitus, and Divino Afflante Spiritu), lovely black and white illustrations between the old and new testaments, a Table of References, a table of Epistles and Gospels, an historical and chronological index to the Old and New Testaments, and colored maps at the back of the Bible. Yes, the print is small, but that is to be expected in this size Bible. It does not have the words of Christ in red and it does not include many notes for study. A nice attractive and portable Bible.
