The Douay-Rheims Bible is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible. Universally used in the Roman Catholic Church for over 1500 years, the Latin Vulgate Bible was meticulously translated from the original Hebrew and Greek by St. Jerome (A.D. 340-420). Since it was translated quite literally and with great reverence for each individual word from the Vulgate, which in turn reflects the structure of the original languages very clearly, the Douay-Rheims Bible gives great insight into the minds of the sacred authors.
For over 300 years, the Douay Rheims Bible was the only Catholic English translation of Scripture used. It continues to be used officially in Catholic churches today. The notes, written by Bishop Challoner are entirely faithful to the teachings of the Holy Catholic Church.
The Old and New Testaments and Historical and Chronological Index have been beautifully retypeset, faithfully to reproduce the original 1899 Gibbons edition. The text is set in the classic Century Expanded font, which was originally used in the 1899 edition, and has been lovingly typed line by line to represent exactly the original edition. The Family Register pages have also been digitally typeset and redrawn.

Baby CatholicRichmond, INAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I recommend this to all Catholics.March 11, 2011Baby CatholicRichmond, INAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I wanted a basic Bible, as I only had a large "family" Bible w/pictures, maps, etc. This "new" Bible is everything I wanted. My old eyes have a little trouble w/the small print, but that doesn't affect my enjoyment of the text's contents!
Lodewijk Langeweg5 Stars Out Of 5October 16, 2009Lodewijk LangewegBeautiful solid feeling edition. Just the right size; not too small, not too big. Easy to read. Contains 30 nice black and white old-time illustrations of biblical scenes printed on glossy paper. Footnotes with interesting short references to other verses, and explanations of terms. Finished off with gold-gilt edging.I like the Douay-Rheims use of "believe in" instead of "believe on", which the King James version has, and only miss one tiny thing in the Douay-Rheims: "which are God's." at the end of 1 Cor. 6:20, which appears in the KJ version. But that's no reason not to buy this marvelous Bible of course... which I do recommend.
Q: Words in red Are the words of Christ in red, in this edition?
No, this Bible does not have red-letter text.
