Publisher's Description

"My six-year-old fusses with her hair for hours. Is this normal?" "Yesterday my seventh grader was all sunshine. Today she's wearing black and won't leave her room." "I'm worried my teenager may have an eating disorder."

In today's complex world, parenting a girl is harder than ever. It takes more than love. It takes insight into the things that make your daughter tick as she grows from childhood to young adulthood.

Drawing on the authors' fifty-plus years of combined counseling experience, Raising Girls takes you inside the mind and soul of your girl. You'll obtain seasoned, expert insights on

  • Your daughter's different stages of development from ages zero to nineteen
  • How you can effectively relate to her at each stage
  • What is normal behavior, what isn't, and when and how to intervene
  • How to deal with self-destructive behavior such as eating disorders, cutting, or experimentation with alcohol
  • . . . and much more

Spiced with stories, humor, and much reassurance, Raising Girls will help you encourage your daughter, challenge her, love her, and help her discover who God is creating her to be.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Hi! My name is Sissy Goff and I am the co-author for Raising Girls with Melissa Trevathan. Melissa and I are both counselors in Nashville, TN at a wonderful place called Daystar Counseling Ministries. It's a little yellow house with a big front porch where hurting kids and families come to receive counseling and find hope. Our staff includes seven full-time counselors, one development director, an art teacher, two office managers, and two full-time dogs--Molasses, an Old English Sheepdog and Noel, a fifteen year-old blind Maltese.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Raising Girls was born out of many conversations we've had with parents over the years...parents who are wondering what is going on with their girls and how they can help.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  What we really hope folks will gain is...hope. Parenting is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs any one will ever hold. It is also one of the most confusing. The way you parent one child may not work with another. Plus, we are in a culture that is changing continually, and the issues facing girls seem to be getting more complicated, as well. What we both want is to come alongside parents...to laugh together, talk, share stories, and hopefully gain a little insight into who God is creating each of their girls to be.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I would say we both learned a lot in this process. Taking a deeper look into the lives of girls made us look a little deeper into our lives as girls...growing up. We both laughed a lot as we remembered our narcissistic years (11-14) and were reminded of God's faithfulness to us both through each of our being raised!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Wow...we both love to read, so we have a lot. Eugene Peterson, Madeleine L'Engle, Henri Nouwen, Frederick Buechner, Elizabeth Goudge, Larry Crabb, Dan Allender, Walter Wangerin, CS Lewis, George MacDonald, Bob Benson, Brennan Manning...maybe that's enough for now!

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  We just are so grateful to be in this place where we're able to sit each day hearing the hearts and struggles of girls and their families. Raising Girls is our way of wanting to help more families than we're able to touch in our little yellow house in Nashville...to share what we're learning and hearing to parents everywhere about how God is faithfully at work growing and redeeming the lives of our girls--and those of us who are raising them.
