For readers of Radical, David Platt's new book Radical Together provides nuance and communal application that makes this book an important read for those desiring to live a radical cross-centered life. While Radical Together is not incomprehensible for those not acquainted with Radical, it is a continuation and clarification of Radical's dialogue, and thus makes Radical Together a great companion to Radical, but not necessarily a great stand-alone resource. So if you have not read Radical, purchase the book and read it! And if you have read Radical, purchase Radical Together and read it! Why such a bold recommendation? Because Radical provides a helpful framework and encouragement for living the life that God has called you to live. And Radical Together clarifies the points made in Radical, while at the same time helping to make the radical cross-centered life a corporate reality in local fellowships and the Church as a whole.

One of the most helpful aspects of Radical Together is in the extended discussion on the Gospel. Some have leveled arguments against Radical, saying that it promotes a social Gospel or works righteousness. While Radical does a good job of articulating the Gospel, the extended talk of the radical life has left some with the assumption that Platt has misunderstood or has misapplied the Gospel. Radical Together hits these critiques head on, and argues for a robust understanding of the biblical Gospel. This can be summed up in the Platt's statement that "the Gospel that saves us from work also saves us to work" (pg. 28). Even though Platt recognizes that the Gospel is a pure grace, he understands that the Gospel is meant to transform those who believe. This means that people are not saved just so they can escape the fires of hell, but people are saved so that they can worship God and enjoy Him forever. Thus, Platt focuses on the Gospel lived out in the Christian life with much biblical wisdom and humble assessment.

The other helpful component of Radical Together is the focus on the communal aspect of living the radical life. Whereas individualism reigns supreme in America, the Christian life is scarcely meant to be lived out on an individual basis. Platt addresses this individualistic tendency by exploring the calling of the body of Christi in local fellowships, and shows how a radical local church can have infectious zeal for the cross-centered life and a great impact upon their surrounding culture and ultimately the entire world.

All together, Radical Together is helpful book when read alongside of Radical. Platt's passion and clear writing style makes this book easily accessible and potentially life altering. Read this book and pass it on to others. It can change your life!

If you feel like the experience in the church you attend is not as fulfilling as it could be and that the Scriptures call for more from the body of Christ, then you will like this book by David Platt. The author continues to challenge how church is conducted in American Culture. He provides many thought provoking points to consider and questions to contemplate.

As Platt indicates, he does not have all of the answers, and there may be other ways to bring praise and glory to God. However, this book will certainly assist you in initiating important discussions and considering other perspectives for how to steward time, talent and treasures that are given to us by God.

    Radical Together by David Platt

I welcome any opportunity to read a David Platt book so when Blogging For Books made "Radical Together" available for review, I jumped on the opportunity to soak up the words.

    I was not disappointed.

It was a non-stop adventure through what it means to be radical together as a church. He sets the tone for this theme with the opening question on page 3:

How can we in the church best unleash the people of god

In the spirit of god with the word of god

For the Glory of god in the world?

How, David? Well... he tells us how and he does it by addressing six main points:

    1. One of the worst enemies of Christians can be good things in the church

    2. The gospel that saves us from work saves us to work

    3. The word does the work

    4. Building the right church depends on using all the wrong people

    5. We are living and longing for the end of the world

    6. We're selfless followers of a self-centered god

However, there is a warning I would issue here; if you are not ready and/or willing to make radical changes, you will fight against the radical ideas David proposes. Radical ideas like:

    - The last thing you and I want to do is waste our lives on religious activity that is devoid of spiritual productivity–being active in the church but not advancing the kingdom of God.

    - As Christians today, you and I can easily deceive ourselves into thinking that dedication to church programs automatically equals devotion to kingdom purposes

    - David Platt challenges us to let go of the good things in order to achieve greater purposes.

I think we can all admit, letting go isn't easy and letting go of what seems good is even harder. His challenge, after his stated thesis, unrolls in this claim:

    Put EVERYTHING on the table.

Meaning, bring all things before God for His approval, no matter how good you think they are. And in this, David begins to show radical submission, radical work for the Lord, radical sacrifices, and radical living.

He does all this first and foremost by sharing what God's Word says about every single topic his thesis sets out to address. He challenges people, churches, and preachers to remember: God's Word does all the work, we are but instruments for Him to use in spreading it.

I could talk, in great excitement, for hours on the lessons and encouragement gained from this little book. It was an easy read with a tough but great message for modern times. It includes resources for small group study and links to his and other websites which contain further FREE resources helpful in growing radically together.

Soaking up this information may have only taken a few days... but the impact will certainly last a life time. A must-read for every Christian, and especially for every Christian in a leadership position.

    Be radical, Jesus was.

Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

Coming right out of the buzz from his New York Times Bestselling book, Radical, Pastor David Platt amends a refreshing addition in Radical Together. Taking the lessons from his first book, Platt projects them into a community of believers. He illustrates, "The force of a single drop of water descending the Andes is miniscule. Similarly, as long as individual Christians journey alone–no matter how 'radical' they are–their effect will be minimal." Platt challenges believers to live in community as radicals. The six challenges that make up the six chapters of this short yet dense work are convicting alone, but coupled with Platt's down-to-earth communication and personal stories of his own convictions it makes for 130 pages of timeless wisdom. The only negative feature of this book is that it is so short. Platt's words left me longing for Christ's revolutionary teachings and wanting to be more and more like Him and less and less like this world. This book has been influential in reconnecting my focus to God and not on this world's pursuits as well as an encouragement to get on board with what God is doing in this world. If after reading this book you have not been changed, then you need to read it again and stay awake this time.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
