I can hardly put it to words how much I love this novel. It is one of the small number of books on my shelves I have re-read close to a dozen times.

It is by far the best Biblical allegory I have ever read. Now, I have never been a huge fan of Biblical allegory. More often than not the author will sacrifice characters and plot for the sake of the allegory and ruin everything, pushing the story in ways it doesn't want to go. Because of that rampant problem I was very reluctant to try this novel. But I am so glad that I took a chance!

RJ Larson has created THE perfect blend of fantasy and allegory. I am just in awe of her skills here. The Biblical elements are strong throughout and easy to recognize, but never once are the characters or plot sacrificed. In fact, they are blended seamlessly. Every Biblical element feels totally organic to the plot.

I absolutely adored Pet/Scythe. Many moments with that crazy but loyal warhorse had me roaring with laughter. I want a horse like that! He reminds me so much of Maximus from Tangled, maybe even better.

Every one of the characters here are beautifully crafted and real. The budding romance between Kien and Ela is so adorable. Kien is such a hoot, and weird as it might sound I love their arguements.

This book deserves ten stars, as do the sequels, they now sit proudly on my favorites shelf.

    Safety ratings:

(Note: it has been a couple years since I read this book. Some details are a bit hazy in my memory)

Romance: I think there was one small kiss, but nothing otherwise.

    Language: clean

Drinking/Drugs: I believe one or two nobles did drink a bit of wine, as was typical of ancient times, but no drunkenness.

Violence: There is plenty of violence in this novel. There are battles, assassination attempts, one wild animal attack, a mummified body, and such. But nothing is graphic. There isn't anything here I would be afraid to let a young teen read.

I loved the details of being obedient to the infinite with constant protection. This book amazed me. I quickly read all 3 books, each equivalent in greatness. I loved the romantic, adventure and comedy all put together. I sincerely hope she will continue the series or do others. 5 stars to RJ Larson!

This is the first book I have read in the Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre and I would have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. I prefer to read books based on historical fact, not fantastical imaginings. However, the author did a wonderful job creating a believable world and relatable characters. I found it easy to fall in love with each character, but especially with the heroine, Ela of Parne and her unlikely friend, Kien Lantec.

The author did a great job creating a fantasy world that was still believable. The events in the story are very similar to events during the time of the prophets in Israel in the Old Testament. R.J. Larson's goal in this story was to make the Old Testament prophets come to life in a fantasy-like world. I liked the parallelism between Old Testament events and this story.

I think my favorite part of this story was how often Ela prayed/talked to her Creator. Though "God" is never mentioned (He is referred to as the Infinite or Creator), I loved how close of a relationship and communion Ela had. She is constantly conversing with her Creator in her thoughts. She brings up more than just her worries and concerns, but her conversations are about little details of her life as well. This story was inspiring and humbling for me, realizing I do not talk to my Savior nearly as much as I should if I really want to KNOW Him. I find myself aspiring to have a better relationship, and this book helped me to see that.

Another aspect of this book that I really liked was what drove Ela to bring people to repentance. She experienced what life would be like if God withdrew His presence from her life. God grants us each breath, it is because of Him that we exist. In the story, Ela is allowed to briefly experience life without Him...it is agonizing and terrible; an idea of what eternal separation from God is like. This drives Ela to share her Creator's love. How often do we forget that God is our reason for living? We get so prideful and confident in our own abilities that we forget we are nothing without God. How many times do I take the credit for the things happening in my life? In fact, God deserves the glory for it all, not me and my "abilities" which are God-given anyways. We need Him; we are His created in need of our Creator. And yet, He gave us free will to choose to love Him, we were not forced to love Him. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance. This message was also displayed loud and clear in this story.

The only thing I would have to critique about this book is that, in my opinion, the author uses "visions" excessively throughout the story. I think they are a neat element, but a bit unrealistic. Yet, in the story, the Infinite does not always answer her questions, or grant her a full and complete vision. He knows what she is capable of handling and doesn't give her every detail.... partly to build trust and partly to protect her. I feel as though the visions were overused, and would have liked to have had less of them in the story.

In summary, I really did enjoy this book. I would encourage fans of Christian Sci-Fi/Fantasy and history guru's to read this series. I was very surprised and glad I expanded my horizons a bit to encompass this story. I look forward to Book Two of this series, and hoping that the author refines her storytelling even more.

I received this book from Bethany House Publishing in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I am 14 years old and I loved this book! This book is one of the best books Ive ever read! I have re-read it many times. I adore Pet/Scythe and the other destroyers! They are really big horses, and they are fiercely protective of their masters. They are called destroyers because they destroy gardens and anything that is in their way. Pet/Scythe is hilarious! He is one of my favorite characters. The Infinite is also one of my favorite characters in the book. The Infinite is the one true God and He talks to His people who will listen. Kein Lantec is one of my favorite characters too. Hes really funny, and it was awesome to see him learn to trust the Infinite and hear His voice. Ela is a prophet, and Tzana is Elas little sister. Tzana is so sweet and she trusts the Infinite. I liked how Ela is always concerned for the lost people who dont know the Infinite. Elas branch from the Infinite was really amazing. Its cool to see how much the Infinite is like God and how much He loves everyone, even the bad guys. It was cool to see that a lot of the characters had a personal relationship with the Infinite. It is super awesome to to see how the Infinite works for the good of those who love Him. There are some things that are similar to the Old Testament in this book. If someone asked me if I would recommend these books, I would!

I love the main characters in this book. In that group Im including Ela Roeh, her sister Tzana, and Kien Lantec. I also adored Pet/Scythe, even though he isnt human. His antics brought me so much amusement. His devotion to his chosen master is incredible.

When the Infinite first asked Ela to be His prophet she hesitated, which was entirely understandable. Then as the story progressed I found it very realistic that at many points she didnt understand what she felt He was telling her to do. The fears and questions she expressed numerous times were so very human it made it even easier to connect with her and pull for everything to turn out well for her.

There were a number of scenes throughout the book that seemed to be very close parallels to stories from the Old Testament in the Bible. I thoroughly enjoyed this connection to the stories I already know. It was fun to try and spot these parallels.

I am really looking forward to reading the other books in this series. R.J. Larson has done an incredible job of creating the people and countries for this fantasy world. I believe that I will get just as much enjoyment from each subsequent journey here as I have from this first one.
