Danielle Hull5 Stars Out Of 5LOVE Cathy Gohlke's characters!June 24, 2015Danielle HullQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My second Cathy Gohlke book in a week. I am hooked. I love her characters; they stay with me for days after I finish their story. Their situations are foreign to me, but their thoughts and emotions are not. They struggle and learn to trust God and do it His way. This story deals with forgiveness, trust, and learning to do the right thing even when it goes against expectations others have of you.
I wasn't sure I'd like the historical and physical setting of the Titanic but I did really enjoy it. It made me cry. I was surprised that she had the ship go down in one piece, as my understanding is that it broke in half. Otherwise, I appreciated the historical setting of Titanic and WWI.
Note: I noticed one of the critical reviews, and I must say that though the book was long, I read it in two days, and that's with 7 kids at home! It was that good! And I found the story to be believable in the chaos of war. -
Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Magnificent Inspirational Epic!February 9, 2015Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5An epic story; brilliantly written, reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragedy but penned from an entirely different perspective. Easy to read? Not particularly. Worth the investment of time and emotion? Absolutely.
Annie and Michael's story was truly riveting, so much so that I allowed myself a couple of mental "recesses" between sections; reading two other books, primarily to refuel my emotional stamina. What a rare example of true inspirational fiction; this one is magnificent and that's a promise!

HSCottageRaleigh, NCAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Lovely Story LineMarch 8, 2012HSCottageRaleigh, NCAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book was written to cover over a 4 year time line, so there was a lot going on in such a time span, that the author could have made this book longer or into two separate books. I would have loved it either way.
At times I was left wanting more, more details of what was happening. Like the time that Annie and the Sprague ladies were kicked off the train. I wanted to know more about the adventure and the people they met along the way, instead of the short version in a few paragraphs. And here is were I could see young Annie trapping around in a fancy dress walking along the railway with a parasol or something, looking weary.
For just an inkling of a second in about 75% through, I thought it was going to happen, the dreaded "rush and get this book over with". But it didn't! It kept right on going like a book should. This author surely did not rush the end so she could finish up and move on to something else.
I learned some new things about Titanic that I did not know, and some information about WW1. So I did get some history lessons in here.
I did some highlighting (kindle version) of some quotes that really struck a cord with me, that I wanted to keep.
Like this conversation: "That's all there is to it," she said as if she'd heard his thoughts. "Each morning, when we wake -if we wake- we pick up whatever it is we've been given to carry for that day, with the sweet Lord Jesus in the yoke beside us to tote the load. Each night we lay it down, giving it into God's hands. If it is still there in the morning, we pick it up and begin again. If the burden is gone or if there is something different, we know where to start."
Those are such profound words of encouragement. There are conversations like that through out the book.
If anything, this book will teach you to rely on God's faithfulness, and how bitterness can consume you and keep you away from God's love.
I received this book from Tyndale for free for an honest review. -

CindiPennsylvaniaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Outstanding!January 18, 2017CindiPennsylvaniaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When I learned that this book was about the Titanic, for some reason I expected it to be similar to the popular movie. Boy, was I wrong. Wrong in a great way, though. The Titanic is just the beginning of this well composed story.
There is so much at stake for Owen and his sister, Annie, when Owen decides to go in search of a better life in America. When Annie learns about the sinking of the ship and how Michael survived due to the love and sacrifice of Owen, she is torn. She doesn't know how to feel. Annie feels anger, hurt, sadness and so many other emotions. Can she get past the turmoil? Can she ever feel peace?
This author has an incredible writing ability. She brings her characters to life. One cannot help but feel deep emotion when reading the pages.
I highly recommend Promise Me This for anyone who enjoys a well told and amazingly written historical fiction. Cathy Gohlke is an author that not only inspires but takes her readers into the story. This book is going on my "keeper" shelf along with the others of hers that I've read.
