WoofiejoAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Powerful, Thought-Provoking Book!January 3, 2014WoofiejoAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Although the name of this book is The Power Of God's Names, don't think this is just another book revealing the different names of God and the underlying meaning. It is so much more than that! Tony Evans has a depth to his writing style that teaches you so much more along the way. He provides thought-provoking lessons not just on the names of God but also provides amazing interpretations of applications for a variety of Bible Stories along the way. For example, the story about Jehovah Rapha (the Lord who heals) becomes a lesson about how we have to submit to God and yield to His ways so that He can do His work. This is not what you would typically find in other books on the same topic. The name Immanuel (God with us) doesn't start with a story of Christ arriving at the manger, but that He has been with us since the start of time at the creation. This sections also includes a great description of how Jesus Christ was fully God and fully man at the same time.
In the chapter on Jehovah Shalom (the Lord is peace), Evans relays the story of Gideon and how "in the midst of personal, familial, and national conflict and turmoil he possessed inner well-being despite the ongoing outer drama". I have never heard the study of Gideon (the mighty man of valor and great warrior) used in relationship to a story on peace, but Evans makes the connection brilliantly as an example of how Gideon had peace through these situations by knowing that God was with him. In order to transform what you do, you must first transform what you think. For Gideon, that meant knowing that God was not only with him but was also for him.
I strongly recommend this book. It is a great teaching on the different names of God and the power behind each aspect of God's character, but it can also be used as a great devotional and teaching on many of the important stories in the Bible and their applications to our lives today.
A complimentary e-copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. -
abellGladewater, TXAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Digging deeperDecember 23, 2014abellGladewater, TXAge: 45-54Gender: femaleI love the teachings of Tony Evans. I just started reading this book today and already love it. When we read scripture we should pay attention to every single word, not just what we think are the 'key' words. Just this morning I read Proverbs 18:10 "The name of the Lord is a strong tower" - I had always focused on Him 'being' a strong tower, but I never noticed the Word saying His 'name' is a strong tower! I know I am going to glean great insight and a deeper understanding of the character of God from this book.

Sufficient in JesusAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A great book for study and reflection.March 7, 2014Sufficient in JesusAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5With clear exposition, engaging examples, and trademark humorous anecdotes, Dr. Tony Evans guides us to discover 14 of God's Names.
Each name highlights another yet another quality of God, and points to one of His acts in out lives. He is our Redeemer, our Sanctifier, our Warrior, our Banner. This book is a stimulating, challenging read. The uniqueness of the names makes them stick in your mind. Have you ever heard the name Jehovah Mekoddishkem? It means The Lord who Sanctifies us.
Probably most of us will never have heard these Hebrew words before and we may never know any more of the language, yet knowing these names can make our own prayers so much sweeter. It is good to have these special names to call God by when we are talking to Him about different things.
When you disappoint yourself, and you feel like you'll never be free of a stubborn sin, remember that God is your Righteousness: Jehovah Tsidkenu.
When the world seems to big, and dark, and crazy, remember that you call on El Elyon, The Lord Most High.
When you know a person in pain or sick, remember that we are loved by Jehovah Rapha, the God who Heals.
And when it is time to sing His praises, we can call Him El Shaddai, the name made well-known in America by the Michael Card/Amy Grant song.
(El Shaddai was the first name of God that I knew, other than Immanuel, and I did learn it from the song. Thank you Amy Grant!)
My Mom has been fascinated with the Names of God ever since she heard about them in a book by Elmer Towns. She also learns a lot from the preaching of Dr. Evans, so when I received this book I gave it to her. She loved it, and used it as a Bible study enrichment. She particularly enjoyed finding each name in the Bible, and making note of the Hebrew words and the meaning.
Thank you Harvest House for my review copy! This book is an ideal choice for a new Christian, to get excited about all of God's glory expressed in His names, or for a seasoned Christian.
