Wilson is the pastor of Middletown Springs Community Church in Vermont and the author several books including; Your Jesus is Too Safe, Gospel Wakefulness, Gospel Deeps, and the The Pastor's Justification.
The Pastor's Justification: Applying the Work of Christ in Your Life and Ministry is a wonderful inside look into the life of a pastor. One of the best things about this book is the transparency that author Wilson reveals. Many of Wilson's stories of success and failure as well as many of his personal struggles are part of what makes this book more than a "how to."
In fact, I think Pastors will appreciate that this is not a "how to grow your church" book at all. It sounds like it should be a "how to be a better pastor book" but it's really not. I think most pastors suffer from "the grass is always greener" mentality. And much of the pastor's focus becomes "how can I build a bigger/better church?" And then success or failure is measured by "butts, bucks and building." Despite what most people think, ministry is hard work and so the pastor needs "fuel" to keep him going.
Starting with a Bible study on 1 Peter 5, Wilson asks the pastor "where is your focus?" Is it Jesus? Is it the cross? Is it the Kingdom of God? Wilson rallies a call back to what makes a pastor "a pastor." (reading this I had many flashbacks to reading Eugene Peterson's "Pastor Memoir")
I really think that all pastors should read this book. I also think that congregations would benefit from this book as well, as it would give them real insight into the pastoral role and would change the way they view and treat their pastor.
Reading this book would be a great way to start the new year. Highly recommended.
