The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is considered to be one of the most literal and elegant English translations available. The RSV was the starting point for the ESV. If you enjoy a literal translation which retains some archaic English you will enjoy this translation. (thee, thou, art, hearken, etc)

Just like the translation, materials that make up this edition can be described as elegant. The Genuine Leather cover is so much nicer than most of the stuff called Genuine Leather. When you take this Bible out of the box, the smell of real leather fills the room. It has a beautiful impressed morocco grain pattern that is super classy. I would describe this edition as flexible. It is not super limp like the Cambridge Goatskin offerings, but it is not stiff like bonded leather either.

This Bible also is smyth-sewn, so the pages are strong and you don't have to worry about pages falling out. This Bible is built to last!

The print is bold and black, but the pages are thin. With the Apocrypha being included, I guess Oxford had to sacrifice page weight to make sure this Study Bible was not a brick. Don't get me wrong, this is far from a thin-line, but it would have been a whole lot thicker if the paper weight was more.

With the smaller paper weight there is some bleedthrough in this edition; however, it is not enough to be overly distracting.

With options being very scarce for the RSV, I am glad that Oxford is keeping this Bible in print; and that they are not cutting back on quality. Without question.... The best RSV in print!

    Be Encouraged:-)

This is a great study Bible for the historically minded. It is not as liberal as the third edition, but just as--if not more--scholarly. I highly recommend it to the serious student of God's Word. I do not recommend the third edition as--though critical scholarship is useful and necessary--it is overly critical and at times, downright paranoid and unscholarly. For example, in the discussion of Philippians 2:6 they say that perhaps the "son of man" image from Daniel is evoked here. Several prominent moderate scholars (Dunn, Hurtado, Wright) have all shown this to be false. They probably said this for the mere sake of being "ecumenical" when actually, they are entirely misleading--and wrong! In *this* edition, the remarks uphold the divinity of Jesus. If you want a New Oxford Bible, get this one--it's just as good, and better for the moderate evangelical.

This Bible is a great Bible. To start with, this edition is clearly real leather and I appreciated it a lot because I just love the RSV/NRSV translations of the Bible, as a (Coptic) Orthodox Christian as well because it contains the Deuterocanonical books of the Bible which are part of the ancient Church's biblical canon. The Deuterocanonicals (or sometimes called 'Apocrypha') are a group of books and book sections detailing ancient Jewish elements of history and tradition, such as the Macccabean Revolt and the Heroess Judith. Thought they are placed at the end of the New Testament, I'm still glad to be able to read them, wherever they may be placed. Another great aspect about this Bible is that it's annotations/comments follow that of critical analysis meaning it tries to find out the original context of the text. Therefore, its a wrong approach when people say that the notes are historical and approach the text in a certain way...this is NOT a study bible per se. To have a rich and full bible study, its a good idea to have a number of bibles with their own unique features (simplistic vs older translations, and notes/comments that are spiritual and historical). Though I may not agree with everything written about biblical criticism in this bible, I am still being enriched and learning a lot. Like St. Basil once said, "you must be like a bee going about the flowers and take the good pollen while leaving the bad."

One of the best friend's an evangelical Christians can have. While editor Metzger admits that the Third Edition of this Bible is not a good choice for believers, *this* edition is. It upholds the deity of Christ and offers scholarly, yet non-liberal interpretations. Metzger himself is a man of integrity who loves Jesus Christ, and is *not* willing to sell out to liberals. This Bible needs to be in the hands of every English-speaking Christian.

I have been looking for the "perfect" Bible for a very long time. I have always loved the RSV, but, as Catholic, never been very happy with the available options in binding, or study Bibles, available in a Catholic edition.

In the NOAB RSV, leather edition, I have found my "Holy Grail". This is a gorgeous edition of my favorite translation physically, and the layout, notes and additional reading materials are superb. My only complaint about the copy I received is that a few of the pagers, randomly throughout the book, are slightly "creased". I have seen this before on another Oxford Bible I have, and I'm not really sure what causes it. It's minor, but, prevents me from giving a 5 star rating to the quality point.

In short, if you are someone who has been looking for a quality study Bible who's notes and additions do not take away from the sacred text, look no further than this edition for both daily meditation and study!
