My story is not about my past, but about your future, says Marie Roberts Monville.
In the startling tragedy of the Amish schoolhouse shooting at Nickel Mines, one story has never been told; Marie Roberts Monville, the wife of the man who created such horror, tells her story for the very first time. It is a story of sorrow and destruction, but also one of majestic deliverance, unending compassion, breathtaking forgiveness, and grace-filled redemption.
Within a solitary moment, Marie Monville realized that life, as she knew it, was over. What she never anticipated was a tangible encounter with God reaching into her circumstances, through them rewriting all she believed about herself, her faith, and the God she thought she knew. One Light Still Shines reveals three love stories: the innocent love of a devoted wife for a husband in pain, the incomprehensible love of God in the aftermath of massacre and destruction, and the redemptive love of Christ, waiting to unfold in the life of every person who reads this book.
Marie's journey since that darkest of days has been invaded with light which shines through these pages into the darkest questions we all face--questions about our past, our value, our identity, and own powerlessness in this fallen world. Come face to face with the Power behind every answera love that begs to be received.
Marie Monville, a life-time resident of the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area, often sat alongside her father in his milk truck as he served his Amish and non-Amish neighbors. She married her high school sweetheart, then gave birth to three children. The first 28 years of her life were quiet, predictable, and full of regular day to day country living. That all changed the day her husband barricaded the Amish schoolhouse at Nickel Mines, just one mile down the road, and murdered one Amish schoolgirl after another, before committing suicide--a horrific scene that stunned the entire world. That day was October 2, 2006. And though she knew that day that the life she'd known had just been shattered, that very same day God infused Marie with an unearthly assurance that he was with her, present and trustworthy, and that he would not fail her. Today, Marie is remarried to Dan Monville, and their blended family is a testament to the healing kindness of God. Today, Marie speaks nationwide as she and Dan continue to raise their five children in the Lancaster, PA area.

Y'all, I could not put this book down once I started it. And when I wasn't reading it, I couldn't wait until I finished my chores so I could get straight back to reading it.
This beautifully written and heart-wrenching memoir will leave no reader untouched. What an amazing testimony Marie has. Marie was the wife of Charlie Roberts, the man who committed a brutal massacre at an Amish schoolhouse. With one phone call, in a matter of minutes, Marie's life changed forever. Charlie was dead and so were at least three little Amish girls, and the others gravely wounded.
Marie revealed her heart through her book and shared her struggles as she began to pick up the pieces and move on after the tragedy. She reflected on God's love surrounding her and the support of her family and friends as each day passed.
This story will absolutely touch your heart and will be one you won't soon forget. This is an amazing read, I highly recommend it!

BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5God's faithfulness in the midst of tragedyJanuary 14, 2014BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5With any tragedy it is often difficult to move forward and to understand how to fathom that what God is doing. When one is affected by tragedy and loss, the sorrow can be overwhelming. In the case of Marie Monville, her role is one that seems even more difficult to comprehend. Compounding the loss of her husband, who took his own life, she must wrestle with the pain that he inflicted when he took lives during the Amish schoolhouse shooting in Nickel Mines.
I must admit, I did not know what to expect - but I was hoping to read of how God, in His kindness, used this horrible circumstances for good. I know that we will never understand what was going on in Charlie's mind, (Marie's former husband), that frightful day and of course, we cannot begin to understand the ways of God. However, Marie's story was filled with the hope of Christ, His promises from His word, and the abundant grace that God poured down on her in the time immediately following the shooting to the present.
As the title indicates, Marie's steadfast faith prior to the shooting really buoyed her during the difficult days following. That is not to say that it was easy, she never made it sound as if it was, but as she reassured her own children of God's faithfulness, the Lord "reassured her". She was also able to share how the Amish families' response was able to captivate and encourage the world.
Marie's family spoke of the a day that sunlight pierced the sky through a mist of clouds, much like God's hand in the midst of sorrow. Marie shared her mother's words, "Just as we reached the the highway, the clouds suddenly parted an these incredibly radiant sunbeams pierced right through the clouds with a brilliant light. The landscape around us had been completely hidden, but when the light beams appeared through the lingering mist everything glistened_. I said to your dad, 'I can't wait until God does something grand in this situation, just as he lit up this sky and burned away that bleak fog.'"
It was certainly not all sunshine, especially faced with the fact that young girls lost their lives at the hands of Charlie, but as you read on Marie shares of how "God came with me into my darkness and lit it with brilliance beyond comprehension." I especially appreciated that she drew near to God's word, sharing scripture that encouraged her and reminded her of the truth of Christ and His faithfulness, she calls it a love story - of God's faithfulness.
LoveToLearnAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Very enjoyable readJanuary 7, 2014LoveToLearnAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5This is Marie's story. Marie is the wife of the Amish schoolhouse shooter. Her husband's act was a horrible, heinous act that left Marie having to deal with the aftermath. She had to answer both to others and herself - if there had been any warning signs. Should she, somehow, have known and warned authorities. Could she have stopped him? Was there something she should have done so Charlie wasn't so broken and angry? Marie had only ever dated Charlie and married him right out of high school. They had 3 young children. Marie wasn't prepared to be a single mom. In the beginning Marie avoided the media and just focused on protecting her children. She talks about the grace she received - given freely to the Amish that had lost children in the shooting. The Amish chose to love and offer her forgiveness. It was an amazing gift of grace poured into her life at a time when she least expected it - at a time when she felt she was most unworthy.
She explains the title of the book she she talks about "when she was blinded by the darkness of grief, his light still shone." The book is about a love story - a story detailing God's love for her and his love for each one of us.
She talks about moving on after the incident and trying to find a way to rebuild her life. I really enjoyed reading her story. The book is very well written. I was surprised to find that she started dating again so soon after losing her husband. She ends up re-married less than 1 year from his death. When reading her book and getting her perspective I can see she felt ready - from an outside viewpoint it just seems so soon after the incident to move on. Other than being surprised at her moving on so quickly, I found the rest to be a wonderful story. It was a very touching story that, in several places, had me in tears. This book is definitely worth reading. It is a book that speaks to us all.

I was very blessed by this book; in many ways it challenged me. However, one major drawback I have is that Marie (the main character) married a divorced man, which is obviously against Scripture. Otherwise Marie's story is great.
