I am a long time fan of this author but somehow missed reading this one. I read this through my librarys book app and really enjoyed it.

I like the fact that this is not a cookie- cutter Amish story. The characters are believable and likable. The story line is intriguing and interesting. There is no conclusion to this story, so next on my reading list is book two! I am so glad I am reading this series after all the volumes are published- I am not patient enough otherwise! Ha!

This book touches on adoption, murder, lies, and love. So glad I read it! I recommend it to anyone who loves Christian fiction, the Amish culture, and series books.

The only thing better than an Amish novel by Shelley Shepard Gray is an Amish Mystery novel by Ms. Gray!

There is no waiting for the mystery to appear. With only an idyllic lead in, the body of Perry Borntrager is found by a group of teenage girls in the first few pages of the book. BOOM! Everyone is shocked, although somehow not surprised, that Perry met an early end to his life. Finding his body down an abandon well leads to many questions that the good people of Crittenden, KY, - Amish, Mennonite, and English, are reluctant to answer.

Local ex-Amish Mose Kramer is now the towns sheriff. Investigating murder is not an every day event in Crittenden and Mose calls in his good friend, Detective Luke Reynolds to give him a hand. Luke, not familiar with the Amish ways, is frustrated at the little bit of information he is able to gather. Does everyone in this town hold secrets surrounding Perry? You wont be disappointed in this well told story by bestselling author, Shelley Shephard Gray!

Summary of Book: In the first book in her new Secrets of Crittenden County series, the beloved author delivers another page-turning romance set in Amish country. When the body of Perry Borntrager is discovered in an abandoned well, the quiet Amish community of Crittenden, Kentucky, is thrown into turmoil. Perry had been missing for six months, and everyone in the town believed he'd left the order, seduced by the wider world he discovered during his rumspringa. Overwhelmed by grief, Perry's family and friends and the rest of the stunned community struggle to understand how such a terrible tragedy-the first death by mysterious circumstance to strike their placid small town in more than twenty years-could have happened. But the death has not only shaken the town, it has invited the scrutiny of the outside world when a homicide detective arrives to investigate the crime. Lydia Plank, Perry's former girlfriend, and Walter Anderson, an Englisher who was Perry's best friend, are the first suspects in the crime. Drawn together by the suspicions of both the authorities and the community, they discover an unlikely companionship that offers solace, understanding, and the promise of something more during the hardest of days.

I enjoyed the characters, story and setting. The entire mystery was suspenseful and the characters are believable. I am not sure how the author is going to keep the suspense and draw it out so long before it becomes less fulfilling when solved. It was enjoyable to know these characters and to read the second and the third will be easy just to see how the mystery progresses. There is no sense of danger and that is what makes it more of a mystery. I believe that this will satisfy most readers. If any clues are given they too are a mystery. It will be a disappointment if the 'bad people' Perry was involved with were to have committed this crime.

I would like to thank Edelweiss and Avon Inspire for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

This book was a real page turner. It is filled with twists and turns. I think the author does an excellent job of keeping us guessing. There are several possibilities of what happened to Perry Borntrager. It is definitely a mystery.

Deputy Sheriff Mose Kramer grew up Amish but left the Amish community to go to school to study criminal justice. Once he graduated he got a job in Clermont County. While working in Clermont County he happens to notice a posting for the sheriff's department in Crittenden County where he grew up. Was taking this position a mistake on his part? Will the Amish community cooperate with him in his investigation? Mose decides to bring in a good friend Luke Reynolds, who is a detective in the Cincinnati Police Department, to help him with the investigation.

Lydia Plank once dated Perry Borntrager. She is holding back secrets from detective Luke Reynolds for fear she might be considered a suspect. She becomes friends with Walker Anderson, an Englishman, who at one time was a friend and co-worker of Perry's. They both decide to get together occasionally and talk about Perry's death. Walker is also holding back secrets from detective Luke Reynolds.

In the mean time, Lydia's folks decide to tell her a secret that they have been keeping from her. Lydia is quite shocked and confused. She doesn't know what she will do with this new found information. Will this secret cause Lydia to leave the community? How will Lydia handle this shocking revelation?

Once again Shelley Shepard Gray has written another great book. I can't wait to read "The Search" book two in The Secrets of Crittenden County.
